The Seattle Times: Movies: "Silver City" is tarnished, but Chris Cooper is sterling
In "Silver City," Chris Cooper plays Dickie Pilager, the not-too-bright scion of an influential political family, who is running for governor.
It's easy to see why John Sayles' "Silver City" is being hurried into theaters this season: It's a crowded tale of politics, set during the election season in Colorado, as a none-too-swift, grammatically impaired scion of an influential political family (named, with little subtlety, the Pilagers) runs for governor.
"Silver City" is a blending of genres — the noirish detective tale and the political satire — but it's like oil and water; the two never quite converge.

Silver City [2004] Shaking Through.net: Movies: Review
John Sayles’ drama Silver City prefers an opposite tactic: It’s a rallying cry for the weary and defeated.
The idea for Silver City came about during the making of Sunshine State; it's a product of Sayles’ bewilderment at how quickly people in Florida lost any sense of indignation at the bungled voting process of the 2000 presidential election and resigned themselves to idly falling back and accepting the end result.
The big difference between Chinatown and Silver City is that the Watergate-era Chinatown was a ’30s period noir indirectly commenting on its present, whereas Silver City is an explicit observation in its moment.

This book is a reprint of the comics #25-30 and un unfortunate consequence of that is it starts rather disjointedly.

 Up From Genre City: Comics
There are singular moments in comics, moments where the very last thing you'd ever expect happens and every time you think about comics from that day forth, part of you will be thinking about that moment.
The comic book medium as we know it would simply not exist without his influence, of course, but the most startling thing about his legacy is its basis in his unflaggingly giving and charitable spirit.
Those of you who don't rabidly buy comics every week may not be familiar with this arcane concept, in which the buyer takes all his or occasionally her new comics and puts them in a pile in the order in which he or occasionally she wants to read them.

Cooper's candidate is a bland oaf who would be benign if he wasn't so easy to manipulate by others; his malapropisms when he steps off script are a welcome bit of comic relief in a movie that is hobbled by earnestness.

John Sayles: Box office to ballot box
"Silver City," which had its premiere last weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival and opens in metro Detroit and other major markets Friday, is about a great number of things, none of which could be dismissed as insignificant.
That would be difficult in any event when one of "Silver City's" primary characters is a Republican gubernatorial candidate whose wealthy father was a national politician, whose campaign brain bears a decided resemblance to Dick Cheney and who has never met a sentence he couldn't mangle.
Sayles admits "Silver City" is more pointed than most of his other socially minded dramas, including last year's "Casa de los Babys," which looked at Americans adopting foreign-born babies, and 2002's "Sunshine State," which was doggedly fair-minded about Florida development.

As much as one may want to like John Sayles - for his politics, his conscience, his devotion to independent film, his lack of artifice - he makes it awfully hard.
"Silver City," another Saylesian parade of aggrieved Americans confronting entrenched corruption, is hampered by the same antidramatic impulses that marred 2002's "Sunshine State" - and, to an even greater degree, the anti-adoption screed "Casa de los Babys" (2003).
Sayles, who has made a considerable income fixing other people's scripts, can't resist the impulse to make every one of his characters a mouthpiece for his political views.
