Silver has been part of the economic and monetary systems of all major cultures and traded in virtually every corner of the inhabited world, from ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt, to Europe, Asia and the Indian subcontinent of the Middle Ages, and the modern Americas.
Silver has been hauled across continents by camel and horseback, loaded onto wooden sailing ships that crossed the Atlantic, carried in cargo planes and armored trucks and is most likely jingling today in your pocket.
Silver salts were commonly used in nose drops and wound dressings, and silver was an ingredient in popular "health tonics" and in oral smoking remedies.

But in pockets of Depression-era America, hard times had prompted a rise in scapegoating – and the Jews were a ready target.
The Silver Shirts, Pelley pledged, would spearhead a new "Christian Commonwealth" in the United States, which would register all Jews in a national census, then systematically reduce their role in business, government and cultural affairs, ultimately confining all Jews within one city in each state.
In fact, Pelley was a kind of founding father of modern hate groups, as several former Silver Shirts went on to become instrumental in forging the post-World War II white-power movement.

Commanded by Lauzun, the legion's 32 officers, 523 light infantry and 156 hussars - the muster roll in June 1779 - were the vanguard of 200 officers and 3,300 men of the first wave of assault scheduled to cross the Channel under Rochambeau's command.
The Legion's winter quarters were in Lebanon, Connecticut, instead of Rhode Island; in 1781, it would march separately to White Plains; at Yorktown it was deployed north of the York River at Gloucester instead of on the primary battlefield.
In defense of the Legion it should be said that three-fourths of the deserters in the fall of 1780 had once before deserted from Britain's German allies and had been recruited only after Lauzun's arrival in America.
