Paralleling the growth of other areas of Ocala was the development of the proposed district in the northeast section of town beyond Ocklawaha Boulevard (Silver Springs Boulevard).
At the spring itself was the Elizabeth Maughs Grotto, dedicated to one of the principal promoters of the Tuscawilla Park improvements.
The history of Ocala following World War II is similar to that of virtually every American city: increasing numbers of automobiles and asphalt fed into the city by the interstate highway system, suburban sprawl, the gradual erosion of the central commercial sector, and strip development along major state highways.

Jews in Ocala organized the United Hebrews of Ocala and established a Jewish cemetery, the second oldest cemetery in the state of Florida.
A group of Jewish businessmen established the East Florida Ice Company, which pioneered refrigeration and cold storage in Marion County, and formed the Silver Springs, Ocala and Gulf Railroad, which extended from Ocala to Rainbow Springs, Dunnellon, Hernando and Inverness with a branch from Dunnellon to Homossassa on the Gulf of Mexico.
The railroad was a key factor in opening Central Florida to development and later became part of the Atlantic Coast Line.

In 1887-1888, the Silver Springs, Ocala and Gulf Railroad Company constructed from Dunnellon to Homosassa an extension of its Ocala to Dunnellon line.
The Silver Springs, Ocala and Gulf Railroad was consolidated into the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway Company in 1901 and in 1902 into the Atlantic Coast Line Railway Company.
The railroad facilities in Homosassa consisted of the depot, a freight dock and storage shed, a siding for cars to be loaded and a turntable for turning the locomotive around.

 Withlacoochee State Trail History
In the late 1800’s, an increase in phosphate mining activity in the area convinced railroad entrepreneur Henry Plant to extend his existing line from Tampa to Croom northward to Inverness to join the Silver Springs, Ocala, and Gulf Railroad, thus completing the Plant System’s west coast route.
Due to a decline in railroad use beginning in the 1960s, service was abandoned and tracks removed on many thousands of miles of rail corridor nationwide.
In December of 1989, CSX transportation sold their 46 mile right of way between Gulf Juction (Citrus Springs) and Owensboro Junction, six miles north of Dade City, to the State of Florida.

The Tampa and Thonotosassa Railroad was incorporated in 1893, running northeast from the South Florida Railroad in Tampa to the small town of Thonotosassa.

J.J. had grown up with a neighbor whose family had wintered at The Lakeside Inn for generations, and the railroad siding conveniently near the Inn evoked pictures of old steamer trunks being unloaded in the '20's and '30's for guests arriving from the north.
The Smithsonian brochure alerted us to the Ocala National Forest, a short drive north of Mount Dora, where we saw Florida as it must have appeared centuries ago.

The South Florida Railroad was a railroad from Orlando to Tampa, Florida, becoming part of the Plant System in 1883 and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902.
The South Florida Railroad was incorporated on October 16, 1878, but was unable to obtain a charter until December 9, 1879, when they took over the charter of the Lake Monroe and Orlando, which was in danger of losing its land grants.
The charter specified that the railroad must pass through Bartow; thus the Bartow Branch was built from the mainline at Lake Alfred (Bartow Junction) southwest to Bartow.

It starts in the velvety green fishing village of Tarpon Springs and meanders south for 34 miles to St. Petersburg.
The 1890s boomtowns spawned the railways that the Withlacoochee Trail now follows: Henry B. Plant's line linking Georgia to Tampa, and the phosphate-mining freight trains of the Silver Springs, Ocala and Gulf Railroad Co.

 Citrus: Riding history's rails
A look back at when trains were the area's driving force leads the Heritage Museum schedule.
The exhibit has some rare photographs of trains that used to make the run from the Silver Springs train depot in Ocala to stops in Citrus County in the late 1980s.
Another local artifact is a steering wheel from the steamboat Kitty Bell, which also used to make regular runs on the Withlacoochee, docking at Steamboat Springs near Floral City.
