		Description: A gold star, 1 ½ inches in circumscribing diameter with a laurel wreath encircling rays from the center and a 3/16 inch diameter silver star superimposed in the center.
		On July 19, 1932, the Secretary of War approved the Silver Star medal to replace the Citation Star.
		Authorization for the Silver Star was placed into law by an Act of Congress for the Navy on August 7, 1942 and an Act of Congress for the Army on December 15, 1942.

		Ross McGinnis was perched in the gunner's hatch of a Humvee when a grenade sailed past him and into the truck, where four other soldiers sat during a Dec. 4 mission in Baghdad.
		For saving the lives of the other soldiers and sacrificing his own, McGinnis, 19, of Knox, Pa., has been posthumously awarded the Silver Star, according to a U.S. military statement released in Iraq.
		The medal is given to U.S. Army servicemembers who have been cited for gallantry in action.

		The Silver Star medal was created in 1932 and was extended to the Navy and Marine Corps by Act of Congress (Public Law 702, 77th Congress) approved August 7, 1942.
		Since the earliest action for which a Silver Star was ultimately issued was during the Civil War, Members of the Army have therefore been eligible to receive the Silver Star for qualifying acts from April 15, 1861 to the present.
