The most obvious antecedents of education as part of larger social purposes were the ideas developed by Andrés Bello and Simón Rodríguez in Venezuela, by Franz Tamayo in Ecuador, and by José Vasconcelos in Mexico, articulating how education would contribute to the development of a new identity for the new Americans.
Throughout the 20th century, States supported the development of schooling for a variety of purposes, including “modernizing” societies, preparing human resources to increase the productivity of the labor force, developing national identity, or transforming the structure of opportunity and fostering social mobility.
The discussion about those purposes was central to any debate on education reform in Latin America.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Ignatius Loyola
They were (St.) Peter Faber, a Genevan Savoyard; (St.) Francis Xavier, of Navarre; James Laynez, Alonso Salmerón, and Nicolás Bobadilla, Spaniards; Simón Rodríguez, a Portuguese.
This work originated in Ignatius' experiences, while he was at Loyola in 1521, and the chief meditations were probably reduced to their present shapes during his life at Manresa in 1522, at the end of which period he had begun to teach them to others.
These final touches were being added by the saint up till the time of his death, after which the first general congregation of the society ordered them to be printed, and they have never been touched since.
