Sima Xiangru (179-113 BCE)2 was a famous poet, but impoverished;3 Zho Wenjun (or Wen Jun) was the widowed daughter of a wealthy man of Linqiong.

The story behind it is that Sima Xiangru was going to leave Wenjun for a younger woman, but changed his mind after Wen Jun wrote Baitou Yin reminding him of the pledges they had made to each other.
