  Chrysler Horizon and Simca 1100
The Chrysler Horizon, Talbot Horizon, and Simca 1100
Simca wanted to move the 1100 upmarket, to a larger size class, so using the same factory assembly line they designed on the same floorpan a larger (102-in wheelbase) five-door hatchback, using the same suspension and stretched (1294cc and 1442cc) versions of the 1100 engine.
The Horizon was built as a replacement for the Simca 1100 (called the 1204 in the States, 1968 - 1972).

Chrysler Horizon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Horizon was a small family car (subcompact) hatchback automobile, designed by the French Simca division of Chrysler in the 1970's and introduced in 1977.
The Horizon, or Project C2 as it was known inside Simca during development, was intended to be a "world car", meaning that it was designed for consumers on both sides of the Atlantic, but in execution, the European and North American versions of the vehicle actually turned out to have very little in common.
The Horizon was produced in Europe until 1985 (in Spain and Finland until 1987), when it was replaced by the Peugeot 309, a car developed in the UK, originally destined to be sold as the Talbot Arizona.

Simca - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Simca was originally affiliated with Fiat, but later, after a period of independence, became increasingly controlled by the Chrysler Group, in 1970 becoming a part of Chrysler Europe and a brand rather than independent company.
The Simca 1100 was for some time the best-selling car in France, while the Simca 1307 and Simca Horizon won the coveted European Car of the Year titles in 1976 and 1978, respectively.
Simca vehicles were also manufactured by Simca do Brasil in Brazil and Barreiros (another Chrysler subsidiary) in Spain, and also assembled in Chile and in Colombia during the Chrysler era.

During the late 1970s Chrysler era, Simca produced the new 1307 range (Chrysler Alpine in the UK) and later the Horizon, both of which were European Car of the Year on their launch.
Some of the most known Simca models were the Simca 1000, the Simca 1100 and the Simca 1100 Rancho, the Simca 1301/1501, the Simca Horizon, the Simca 1307/1508, the Simca Solara and the Talbot Arizona (remember Simca owned the Talbot brand).
After the end of the Simca brand, the construction line of the Simca 1307 was transferred to USSR by Moskvitch and was used to build the Moskvitch Aleko whose exterior characteristics are almost exactly the same with the French model.

 Talbot Horizon
While the 1294 cc Simca 1100 Special produced 75 bhp and the 1100 TI 82 bhp, the same power unit in the Horizon was detuned to produce only 67 bhp, presumably for economy.
Nevertheless, the Horizon sales got off to an excellent start in France, and by the time the car was launched in the UK in October 1978, it was obvious Simca had another success following on the heels of the Alpine/1307.
Horizons were assembled in the UK at the Ryton plant from 1982 and a number of important fleet orders were secured by Talbot once it was seen as a British built car.

Development of the Chrysler - Talbot - Simca Horizon
The Horizon was launched as the SIMCA 1100's replacement, and the press (especially in Europe) were quick to proclaim the design, "an Anglo-French triumph", even though, under the skin, there was little to differentiate it from the SIMCA 1100.
That is not to downplay the Horizon's achievement.

The former purchase unfortunately turned out to be a major mistake for the company, inheriting a major industrial relations problem which afflicted the British motor industry at the time, coupled to the archaic factories and outdated product range that Rootes manufactured.
The Simca division was more successful, but in the end the various problems were overwhelming and the firm gained little from these ventures.
The subcompact Horizon was just beginning to reach the U.S. market when the second gas crisis struck, devastating sales of Chrysler's larger cars and trucks, and the company now had no strong compact line to fall back on.

 SIMCA 1100
Unveiled to the press in Sardinia in September 1967, the general mechanical layout of the 1100 was, by French standards, conventional.
For Simca it was a big step forward, as all their other models were then rear wheel drive.
But with the launch of the Simca Horizon in France early the same year, production of the 1100 was gradually reduced.

Also, Chrysler had a hard time legalizing the current SIMCA engines, especially since none had been imported since 1973, so the initial engine used was the 70 hp, 1.7 litre unit from the Volkswagen Rabbit, presumably because it was already smog tested and certainly because it was readily available.

En Europa, el Horizon era considerado un coche familiar y por lo tanto se encontraba en un segmento muy competitivo, mientras que en EEUU estaba visto como vehículo básico de transporte, donde encajaba perfectamente.

And SIMCA is the name of an obsolete French car company, basically in business from 1934 to 1986, and very profitable for most of those years (certainly from 1951 to 1979).
In 1954, SIMCA purchased Ford France SAF, and relaunched the Ford Vedette as a SIMCA.
We may still have had SIMCA cars today, or at least, models from Chrysler-France, as the official name was changed in 1970, if it were not for Chrysler's major financial troubles in the US in the 1970's.

Again, front-drive hatches all owe the Simca 1100 a great deal, because it was the first truly modern front-wheel drive car, with a transverse engine with a seperate gearbox mounted on the end of the engine (or side-mounted) and utilizing unequal length driveshafts.
The car became very popular in Europe and for a time Simca was at the apogee of it's existence, but the cars were poorly made and began to lose ground quickly in the early seventies to the Fiat 128.
The Talbot/Simca Horizon, which was unveiled in 1978, replaced the 1100 but was basically a heavily restyled version of the earlier car and much was retained - including the old engines and suspension arrangement.
