The system is being used at the Essa landfill site in Simcoe County, Ontario, as a less expensive alternative to clay covers—the traditional method of managing contaminated runoff from landfills.
Impressed by the feasibility study results, the county prepared for the pilot study by improving the water-holding capacity of the landfill fines and adopting a soil nutrient amendment program that resulted in an ideal growing medium for the trees.
County representatives remarked that although initial research indicated that only 90 per cent of the trees would survive, in fact, "100 per cent of the trees are surviving."
