Simeon North (1763 - 1852) was a Middletown, Connecticut gun manufacturer, who developed America's first milling machine in 1818.
{{North is now generaIly credited with the invention of the milling machine-the first entirely new type of machine invented in America and the machine that, by re- placing filing, made interchangeable parts practical.
In 1795, North began to produce scythes in a mill adjacent to his farm in Berlin, Conn. Four years later, he obtained a contract to make pistols and began to add a factory to the mill building.

A native of Berlin, Connecticut, Simeon North was a successful manufacturer of scythes before he turned to gun making, eventually becoming one of the major suppliers of firearms to the United States military before the Civil War.
In 1799, North secured his first contract with the army, who ordered 500 of his flintlock pistols; the next year the order was increased to 1500.
After the war, North continued to create pistols that incorporated minor changes: an addition of a swivel ramrod, a safety catch slide on the hammer, and a brass foresight on the barrel.

Edward North, fourth son of Reuben and Huldah (Wilcox) North, was born in Berlin, Conn., March 9, 1820, and belongs to the eighth generation from John North, one of the original proprietors and settlers of Farmington, Conn., in 1653.
In 1844 Professor North received the degree of A.M. from the trustees of Brown University; in 1869 the degree of L. from the Regents of the University of the State of New York; and in 1887 the degree of LL.
Since his election in 1843, Professor North has given instruction in the Greek language and literature to fifty-two successive classes, and upwards of 2,000 students, many of whom in the later classes have been sons of those who were students in the earlier classes.

President North was an accurate and profound scholar, with a genius for imparting information, and great suavity of disposition, he became president of Hamilton when its affairs were in a gloomy condition, and brought them into prosperity, His later life was passed in retirement.

Steeped in the early history of Connecticut and the United States, Pistol Creek Golf Club is located on the very grounds where American pioneer and inventor Simeon North revolutionized the production of firearms in the United States, producing thousands of handguns for the government during the War of 1812.
North produced metal scythes in the mill, but four years later he won a contract to make pistols and by 1813, he signed a contract to produce 20,000 pistols.
North is also credited along with Eli Whitney with inventing the milling machine, the first entirely new machine to be produced in America.

Beginning in 1840, Simeon North delivered Model 1840 carbines, which are characterized by an improved opening device (either an elbow lever or fishtail lever), and a 21-inch barrel with a conventional rod, which was used for cleaning the bore.
In 1843 North brought out the most common of the Hall models, the Model 1843 side-lever carbine, still with the 21-inch barrel and rod.

Gurske said the government bought dozens of the North pistols and rifles to fight with during the Civil War at a cost of about $1.50 each.
The machine donated to the society is a replica of the machine named by North as the Parkhurst.
Gurske said the original machine was known to have been in the North Pistol Facility in Berlin in 1825, but the historical path the machine took from there is unknown.

At Holly Spring MM on 1-18-1862, Simeon and wife Ruth were granted a certificate to Center MM, Ohio.
Simeon died Oct 21 1912, buried Providence Friends PM Cemetery, Providence Township, Randolph County, North Carolina.
