In the Bulgarian elections of 17th July 2001 a new political party headed by Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the former King Simeon II, topped the polls.
Since the fall of communism relations have gradually thawed between Simeon Saxecoburggotski (as he is known in his native land) and the Bulgarian authorities; citizenship was re-granted and property returned, culminating in Simeon's visit to Bulgaria in 1996.
As for the past, Simeon himself has a clean slate, not having played any role in Bulgarian politics since 1947 and for the future, he is widely admired as a successful Western businessman able to provide the modern leadership Bulgaria needs.
