Simian: We Are Your Friends: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
UK band Simian might be an exception to this trend, though, a predominantly guitar-based pop-rock band that somehow doesn't fall easily into my preset compartments.
Simian manages this by embracing musical innovation more recent than Pet Sounds, most notably in their use of computerized rhythm tracks to flesh out the sunshine daydream, leaning more on the sampler than the spacey psychedelics of their debut, Chemistry Is What We Are.
Simian also tends to get a little too jokey in their delivery, a weakness that becomes gratingly annoying in the cartoonish vocals of the otherwise groovy "Helpless" or the awful horror-show lyrics of "Skin".

BBC - collective - simian live chat - transcript
Simian James: He was interested in the way we worked, and when a living legend asks if he can come round, we jumped at the chance.
Simian Simon: When we started out we hadn't played many gigs, so we wanted to do some events, and we happened to live opposite a church, and it was a bar, so we were there one day having a drink, and thought we'd do a gig there.
Simian James: We record stuff into a computer like a tape machine, and we rearrange it, so it doesn't matter what the noise is, we can make it work...

British band befriends America - Columbia Chronicle Online -March 10, 2003
Band members Simon Lord and Alex Macnaghten, over a Rolling Rock and a Coke, respectively, discussed Simian’s short history, home-recording techniques and their burgeoning friendship with über producer Brian Eno.
Each band member is versed in the synthesizer and only learned to perform as a live unit after realizing that touring was necessary to gain exposure.
Simian has been compared to fellow Brits, The Beta Band; and while the two band’s styles are quite different, there is one glaring similarity: an obsession with contemporary American RandB producers.

Simian: We Are Your Friends - PopMatters Music Review
I even loved the Simian antics -- blindfolding record executives and bringing them to secret band studio/hide-outs; posing for only one sepia-toned band photograph, buried deep in the album insert, with all members in goofy Victorian suits; creating a gleefully irreverent Church of Simian in a lush and grandly silly webpage.
The band was better defined by the bizarre, sad-faced dog-llama (really, a good metaphorical manifestation of Simian's own mutant sound) on their album cover than by any of their own faces.
Simian themselves say most of their current influences now lie in American R&B, one of the most image-fixated, homogenous genres around right now (of course, with many notable exceptions; I'm talking, for example, about Brandy).

Simian Gibbons awoke one day on the muddy banks of the Colorado River with no memory of his past or why he was there, only a piece of paper that held the faint inscription "milk, eggs, pop rocks, slurpee" and the knowledge that he was Simian Gibbons and he was meant to change the world.
As soon as their first demo track was cut, key band member Grandpa Microphone quit the band and soon after died from old age complicated by a fatal overdose of love and nutmeg.
Simian seized the opportunity, reassembling the remaining members into the hazy glory that is Simian Gibbons and the Vengeful Winds of the North.

Such is the imaginary plight of Ladytron vocalist Helena Marnie, whom I—after having watched her band perform at a packed show last Wednesday—could most aptly describe as 'the one who smiled.' Ladytron, a four-piece hailing (more or less) from Liverpool, is a band big on aesthetics and small on warmth.
In their immaculate grey uniforms (the tour was sponsored by clothes manufacturer Diesel) and even more immaculate haircuts, the band—Marnie, Reuben Wu, Daniel Hunt and Mira Aroyo (with a bassist and drummer thrown in for the tour)—perform their songs with cold efficiency, quite nicely replicating the sound of their layered, 1980s revivalist records.
Their enthusiasm was commendable (especially given how dour the next band up was) but their songs were not.

 Simian - Never Be Alone
Mancunian synth band Simian have been threatening to break big for some time now, and Never Be Alone may be the song that does it for them.
Although the rather tinny Casio-like keyboard sounds a bit dated, there’s no denying that this is a classy piece of pop with a nicely menacing edge to it.
Despite the fact that the song’s chorus "we are your friends...you’ll never be alone again" sounds more like a threat than a promise, this is an impressive single from a band who could yet be set for great things.

I don't know if Simian really kidnapped a record exec to get their first record out, but from the sound of their debut's music, they didn't need to.
