Lack of adaptations and the mountain nyala’s presence at lower altitudes suggests that this is a relict population and not a montane specialist (Kingdon 1989).

Wolf populations occur north of the Rift Valley in the Simien Mountains, Mount Guna, North Wollo and South Wollo highlands, and Menz.
