 THE BROOKLYN RAIL - MUSIC
Far and away my favorite recent discovery is Simon Finn’s Pass the Distance, a dark, haunting, frequently unwieldy mix of English folk music, late-sixties psychedelia, free-form jazz, and studio experimentation that transcends its apparent influences and obvious flaws to create something utterly timeless and distinct.
Simon Finn first strolled into London in 1967, a stringy-haired, frail-voiced Donovan-styled troubadour who spent his nights on park benches and his days charming impressionable young women with his whimsically romantic folk compositions.
In the studio, Keary encouraged Finn’s recent experiments, pushing the music even further away from the folk tradition that had given it birth—along with any potential for commercial acceptance—with his generous use of stereo panning and echo effects.

It appears that Finn was an individual who was probably swept up in the Jesus Movement of the late '60s which took an antinomian, free-spirited approach to Christian scripture.
The lyrics to Pass The Distance, Finn's first and only record, are splattered with loosely Christian imagery and apocalyptic doomspeak, which are the obvious appeals for Tibet and his polyglot of Christian gnosticism.
On certain songs, Finn wanders through his lyrics with a bizarre lack of melody as if he's enjoying a handful of mushrooms at the time; yet at others, he bares his teeth with an incendiary emotional ferocity which uncannily resembles Devendra Banhart's possessed yelps on his first album.

 The Other Music Update
Simon Finn has rendered a collection of newly recorded songs after nearly 35 years since the release of Pass the Distance, the unequivocal psych-folk masterpiece originally released on UK's Mushroom label and later reissued by enthusiast and influential descendent David Tibet (of Current 93) on his Durtro imprint.
An incredibly distinguished musician, Simon Finn stood disparate and slightly offbeat to latent peers such as Syd Barrett, Tom Rapp, Duncan Browne and the singer-songwriter side of the ESP label--carving out a unique alcove as an outsider folk artist.
Finn yields delicately brooding, more emotionally pervasive pieces that vividly illustrates himself as the indignant protagonist wrought in both imaginative and real-life accounts of love, empathy, alienation, and struggle.

 reviews of singersongwriters
Simon Finn’s first record was an, at times, weird and vèry psychedelic song record, with several beautiful but also various psychedelic-overemotional songs, accompanied by acoustic guitars, handpercussion, some electric guitars, some keyboards and a few other instruments, some drums, sometimes slightly slipping in rhythm and tonalities in a few tracks, making its own distinctive style.
This is the first new release by Simon Finn after 30 years, and it’s nice to see nothing of his honest slightly open-emotional playing has changed over the years.
The production is plain and welcome.  The lyrics are very simon finn.  He turns a phrase in a very particular way.  Little details complementing the universal theme of lonliness, fear, and isolation.

Simon Finn - Pass the Distance - Review - Stylus Magazine
Curiously, and nearly soundlessly, the folk shamans and heady psychedelic denizens have usurped the status of the renegades of old; Incredible String Band records are going for as much as a commercial stove; and Nick Drake and Wizz Jones and Simon Finn are sedulously stranger, spookier, and scarier than a host of Mr.
As in the ostensible title-track, “Fades (Pass the Distance)”, Finn works through the song with a not dispassionate recitation, but in the track’s remaining seconds begins to ape some sort of idea of a besotted medieval madman, wandering about the heath spitting out a vocal refrain.
It’s impossible, of course, to determine if Finn, or Shatner, were taking drugs to make music to take drugs to, but there are some tell-tale signs present; lyrics, for one.
