Hundreds of Simon Fraser University students voted Wednesday to impeach the executive of their student union, but the importance of the vote appears to be in the eye of the beholder.
The student group, which was started in August as a protest against the student society firing a staff member, released the results of the vote on Thursday.
The student society had called an annual general meeting for the same time that the student group was calling its special general meeting and drew about 100 people, according to Hunsdale, who noted a quorum is rarely reached.

Katherine Whitbread, student representative on SFU's board of governors said that she is in favour of the plan because it is affordable compared to other extended health plans.
Karabotsos added that if the society has to increase the cost of the health plan, it will be put to referendum because the student society did not provide for cost increases in the wording of the original referendum question.

Students are frustrated by the SFSS, especially its treatment of the health plan and the CFS," said student Albert Chan.
The movement to dissolve the student society is the first of its kind on a Canadian campus according to Michael Gardiner, BC Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students.
If over seventy five percent of students do vote for dissolution, a special general meeting would be held where 550 students must vote fifty percent plus one in favor of dissolving the student society.

Until recently, student society staff were part of CUPE 2396 along with staff people from other student unions in the Lower Mainland, SFPIRG, and the Canadian Federation of Students’ provincial office.
Grad students at SFU fall under the same student union as all other students at SFU, but are given some autonomy in the form of the Graduate Issues Committee (GIC): a body with one staff member and some funds at its disposal.
In recent years SFU students and their elected representatives have been critical of the national student organisation, irritating those high up in the organisation, and Hunsdale has been working towards ending this period of dissent.

On Friday, October 27th, the Simon Fraser Student Society bank accounts were frozen as a response to the refusal of impeached directors to step down.
Six of the seven SFSS officers removed from office are challenging the process and outcome of the Special General meeting and are refusing to vacate their positions in the interim.

This is ridiculous; it is not the job of the SFSS to protect their staff from disciplinary action; that is the job of the Union.
Whatever the courts decide on this matter, one thing is clear, the actions of the impeached members of the student society, and those that support them, since the SGM are clearly negligent.
