In 1721 Harcourt was created a viscount and returned to the privy councils; and on several occasions during the king's absences from England he was on the council of regency.
Harcourt married, first, Rebecca, daughter of Thomas Clark, his father's chaplain, by whom he had five children; secondly, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Spencer; and thirdly, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Vernon.
Simon Harcourt predeceased his father, the lord chancellor, in 1720, leaving a son Simon Harcourt (1714-1777), 1st Earl Harcourt, who succeeded his grandfather in the title of viscount in 1727.

26) Thomas was the first Harcourt deeply involved in Oxfordshire administration, serving as knight of the shire in 1376 and as custodian of Oxford castle; he possibly began the rebuilding of the manor house, and his wife Maud was commemorated by an elaborate tomb in Stanton Harcourt church.
In 1475 John Harcourt granted the manor to trustees, and in 1483 was outlawed for his part in Buckingham's rebellion; he died in 1484, leaving the manor to his relict Ann.
In 1642 Sir Simon Harcourt, governor of Dublin, was killed at the seige of Kilgobbin castle (co. Dublin).

A PAIR of silver wine coolers made, for the 1st Earl of Harcourt, by a Parisian silversmith and an identical pair made by an English silversmith are among the highlights of Sotheby's sale of Important Silver, Gold Boxes & Fabergé.
The wine coolers belonged to Simon, 1st Earl Harcourt (1714-77), whose roles included Ambassador to Paris in 1768, and it was here that he acquired additional Auguste pieces.
Interestingly, as the Harcourts were passionate about the French style, they commissioned English copies of French silver from their collection as it was more economical.

Lord Anthony Ashley (1621-83, later the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury), Lord Chancellor 1672-73, chancellor of the exchequer 1661-72.
He was one of the most important politicians in the mid-17th century, but was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1681 and died in exile in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
In 1715, he became a member of the privy council, and in 1725 he was created 1st Baron King of Ockham.
