The Slaying of the Shrew by Simon Hawke
Hawke's latest frolic, The Slaying of the Shrew, follows on his series' 2000 debut, A Mystery of Errors, in which Shakespeare and Smythe foiled a foreign plot to overthrow the English government.
Hawke spices his story with allusions to the Bard's works that will delight and impress readers of Shakespeare without sending everyone else running for the reference books.

Therapy Fights 'Mad Cow'-Like Illness in Mice - 3/5 Reuters
Hawke said that the antibodies used in the current study were engineered to bind to both abnormal prions and normal prions.
Hawke explained that the antibodies may bind to both the abnormal and the normal forms of prions, preventing the healthy proteins from converting into disease-causing prions.
Indeed, when Hawke and his colleagues injected scrapie-infected mice with the antibodies, the mice experienced an overall reduction in levels of the abnormal prions in their bodies, and stayed healthy for more than 300 days after a comparison group of untreated, infected mice had died.

Amazon.com: A Mystery of Errors: Books: Simon Hawke   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-02)
Hawke tells the tale of Symington Smythe, a young man with his heart set on being an actor (though he's never actually had a job on the stage); Smythe hooks up with a young would-be playwright by the name of Will Shakespeare.
Hawke is the author of many successful fantasy novels; this is his first mystery, but you'd never know it.
Simon Hawke is successful in giving the reader a glimpse of the political and religious intrigue that was taking place behind all the fanfare of Elizabethan England; and I liked his portrayal of William Shakespeare immensely.

The SF Site Featured Review: The Last Wizard
For those unfamiliar with him, Simon Hawke has been writing science fiction for the better part of 25 years, producing more than 30 novels -- including three series, several trilogies and about half a dozen stand-alone stories.
There are neat character revelations and Hawke's usual witty dialogue, but as the final installment in the series it's again somewhat lacking.
Hawke hasn't written about these characters in several years and his rather perfunctory treatment of the plot gives this an "I-owe-my-readership-some-closure-but-don't-really-feel-like-writing-this-stuff-anymore" feeling.

Simon Hawke's (then Nicholas Yermakov's) early books were published in 1981-1984.
Since re-launching his career as "Simon Hawke" in 1984, he has produced a large volume of lighter, more commercially viable fiction.
Of note, Hawke's "Friday the 13th, Part 3" adaptation is actually the second made of that movie.

Simon Hawke brings William Shakespeare’s “hidden years” (1585-1592) to light in the third of this lively series chronicling the fledgling actor/ playwright.
Hawke admits he is no Elizabethan scholar but a college lecturer on Shakespeare and his dialogue and ear for the period ring true.
So when Hawke’s characters seem to quote Shakespeare it is actually contemporary to their time.

The setting is very detailed as Simon Hawke adeptly describes many aspects of Elizabethan life, from town life to country life to the gentry life.
Simon Hawke has worked in the necessary background information seamlessly so new readers can catch up from Tuck and Will’s first outing, but without the awkwardness that sometimes comes from this sort of exposition.
