ENOUGH ROPE with Andrew Denton - episode 67: Simon Yates (07/03/2005)
Simon Yates was immortalised in the film and book 'Touching the Void', the now legendary story of Joe Simpson, a mountain climber who shattered his leg on the descent of one of the world's toughest peaks.
SIMON YATES: Well it's a whole series of events I suppose part of it is a great deal of the pleasure of it all is that the outcome's uncertain, you don't know what's going to happen and it's very complex and you're continually having to make decisions and alter your plans and your ideas...
SIMON YATES: I thought we were probably both going to die to be quite honest, you know, because we were still...about 20 000 feet on this mountain in the middle of nowhere in Peru and, yeah it's not like you can dial a friend is it or something and get yourself beamed out.

 Touching the Void
In June, 1985, British mountain climbers Joe Simpson (21) and Simon Yates (25) became the first people ever to make their way up to the top of the 21,000 foot Siula Grande peak in the Peruvian Andes via the mountain's nearly 90 degree west face.
This is not only a documentation of what happened, recording how this bleak scenario almost cost Simpson and Yates their lives, but is also a profound meditation on death and hopelessness; an examination, in both climbers, of the human drive to survive that not even they quite understand.
But beyond the obvious, we are witness to Yates’ much-criticized thought process at the point of cutting the rope, Simpson’s desperation in his icy tomb, Yates’ haunted journey down the mountain alone, and Simpson’s mental determination, with a broken leg, to make a journey that has become climbing legend.

At this point, matters deteriorated further when Yates was forced to cut their connecting rope when Simpson had fallen over a cliff and was in danger of dragging his partner with him.
Their climb to the summit was standard mountaineering fare, but after Yates breaks his leg on the way down (the film interestingly notes that 80% of injuries occur during the descent), the remainder of the film had me cringing and wincing from the sheer horror of what Yates had to overcome to survive.

Touching the Void (2003): Nicholas Aaron, Brendan Mackey, Joe Simpson, Simon Yates - PopMatters Film Review
While Simpson and Yates returned to the site for the making of the film, it is clear in interviews published and aired since production that even at that time, some 18 years after the trauma, their experiences remain dissimilar.
And so, while Simon admits that he thought, for a brief second, that he would be better able to make his descent if Joe was not a factor, he never meant to leave behind a man who was alive; thinking Joe was dead, he cut the rope.
As Simpson and Yates speak about their experiences, you realize that each can only tell so much, that his understanding of his partner's or even his own experience at that time can't be comprehensive or settled.
