St. Irene Chrysovalantou | Simon the Zealot and Apostle
Saint Simon, Bishop of Vladimir and Suzdal was an author of the KIEV CAVES PATERIKON, and he became a monk at the Monastery of the Caves, sometime in the second half of the twelfth century.
Simon, seeing that Polycarp was not yet ready to assume such an office, talked the Great Prince out of his idea, and he wrote a deeply moving letter to Polycarp, in which he offered his friend advice on overcoming his spiritual shortcomings.
Simon was known as a learned teacher, and his epistle to Polycarp was placed at the beginning of the KIEV CAVES PATERIKON.

Saint Peter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Simon Peter is considered a saint by many Christians, and the first Pope by the Roman Catholic Church, including its Eastern Rites.
A denial when Simon Peter had gone out to the gateway, away from the firelight, but the same servant girl or another told the bystanders he was a follower of Jesus.
Luke deviates slightly from this by stating that, rather than a crowd accusing Simon Peter, it was a third individual.

Maudlin Acre: St Simon the Zealot   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
With St. Simon the Zealot, we hit the proverbial rock-bottom of reliable biographical information, although he is mentioned in all of the lists of the Apostles given in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and in the book of Acts.
To distinguish Simon from Simon Peter, he is given the second name “the zealous”, which appears in its various Hebrew forms (Kananaios, Kananites and Zelotes), which may give us a clue as to his life before becoming an Apostle of Jesus.
Although we don’t have a clue where St. Simon the Zealot and Apostle preached, lived, or died, the study of his poorly documented life still gives us reason enough to toast his devotion to Xristos Soter and to the inner life that nourishes us all.

 St Simon
St Simon is surnamed the Canaanean or Canaanite, and the Zealot, to distinguish him from St. Peter, and from St. Simeon, the brother of St. James the Less, and his successor in the see of Jerusalem.
Hammond and Grotius think that St. Simon was called the Zealot, before his coming to Christ, because he was one of that particular sect or party among the Jews called Zealots, from a singular zeal they possessed for the honour of God and the purity of religion.
Simon, after his conversion, was zealous for the honour of his Master, and exact in all the duties of the Christian religion; and showed a pious indignation toward those who professed this holy faith with their mouths, but dishonoured it by the irregularity of their lives.

Bible Study - Simon The Zealot
The overwhelming power of the Roman military caused their rebellion to fail, after which they became scattered rebels who were also known as Sicarii ("dagger men"), from their deadly use of the sica, a Roman dagger.
The Zealots were leading members of the revolt against Rome in 66-70 AD (see Fall of Jerusalem In 70 A.D.), and at Masada they committed suicide rather than surrender to the Roman Tenth Legion (see Roman Legions).
At least one of The Twelve Apostles, who were personally chosen by Jesus Christ, after being directed by God in prayer, was a Zealot - Simon (not to be confused with the other Simon who is known as Peter, although Peter's temperment in his earlier years well-suited him to have been a Zealot).
