Simone Martini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Simone Martini died while in the service of the Papal court at Avignon in 1344.
Simone's art owes much to French manuscript illumination and ivory carving: examples of such art were brought to Siena in the fourteenth century by means of the Via Francigena, a main pilgrimage and trade route from Northern Europe to Rome.
Simone's major works include the Maestà (1314) in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, St Louis of Toulouse Crowning the King at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples (1317), the S.

 Art of Simone Martini
Simone most probably learnt the trade in the workshop of Duccio di Buoninsegna, but he only became well-known as an artist when he painted and signed the Maestà in the Sala del Mappamondo in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena in 1315.
Simone married into Lippo's family, then, and this further strengthened a bond of friendship and artistic collaboration that lasted throughout their careers, reaching its highpoint in the Annunciation in the Uffizi where it is actually quite difficult to distinguish Simone's work from Lippo's.

Martini, Simone (circa 1280-1344), Italian painter, who was one of the most original and influential artists of the Sienese school.
Building on the techniques for indicating three-dimensional space developed by the Sienese master Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone added a refined contour of line, grace of expression, and serenity of mood.
Simone lived in Assisi for a time, where he produced one of his greatest frescoes, illustrating scenes from the life of St. Martin for the chapel of St. Martin.

History of Art: Gothic Art-Simone Martini
A personal friend of Simone Martini, he commissioned a portrait of his beloved Laura from the Sienese master (this is now-lost, but is mentioned in one of his sonnets).
Martini was very possibly a pupil of Duccio di Buoninsegna, from whom he probably inherited his love of harmonious, pure colours and most of his early figure types.
Simone's earliest documented painting is the large fresco of the “Maesta” in the Sala del Mappamondo of the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena.

 Simone Martini
He followed the manner of painting proper to his native Siena, as improved by Duccio, which is essentially different from the style of Giotto and his school, and the idea that Simone was himself a pupil of Giotto is therefore wide of the mark.
Simone, in particular, tended to an excessive and rather affected tenderness in his female figures; he was more successful in single figures and in portraits than in large compositions of incident.
The first known fresco of Simone is the vast one which he executed in the hall of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena -- the Madonna Enthroned, with the Infant, and a number of angels and saints; its date is 1315, at which period he was already an artist of repute throughout Italy.

But Simone had behind him an art, as iIllustration so perfectly satisfying both to himself and to his townsmen, as Decoration so adequate, far though it was from perfect, that it would have taken overwhelming genius if, even then, the conditions of a medieval town had permitted it to transcend them and start afresh.
That Simone felt hampered by Duccio's precedent we see clearly in works which show him in close rivalry with his master, and it is therefore not in the more dramatic and passionate Gospel themes themes in which Duccio excelled that we shall discover Simone's peculiar greatness.
Simone subordinates everything and he was great enough to have much to subordinate to his feeling for magnificence, beauty, and grace.

Simone’s projected date of birth is based on a 16th-century source, but may well be accurate, even though the date of his first signed work, the fresco of the Maestà in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, is a relatively late 1316.
Despite its church setting, the cycle is a work of court art; painted by Simone Martini, himself ennobled while in Anjou service, it glorifies the French ruling house through the figure of St. Martin, who had close connections with both France and Hungary.
Simone introduced some of the most significant innovations in the genre of the devotional panel, such as the so-called Madonna dell’Umiltá (Mary kneeling and at the same time suckling the Child).

 Biography
The type of Madonna evolved by Simone was of great importance in Sienese painting and may be seen in his Pisa polyptych (1320) and in several others.
In 1328 Simone painted another fresco for the Town Hall, Siena, this time a commemorative equestrian portrait of the mercenary soldier Guidoriccio da Fogliano.
At some date not yet established Simone went to Assisi and painted a fresco cycle in S. Francesco, of scenes from the life of St. Martin, which again show both the interest in French Gothic art and the sense of chivalric pomp that distinguish Simone.

His grand formal altarpieces encompass at the most exalted professional level a range of decorative techniques that were simply beyond the reach of most of his contemporaries.
In short, Simone’s documented work is far richer in contrasts than the comparable output of any other 14th-century artist, revealing a restless and innovative temperament.
His work was certainly based on precedent (though the closest antecedents are a matter for debate), and there is a recognizable ‘Simone style’ in the various polyptychs associated with him and his workshop.
