Simone Melchior was only seventeen years old when she met Jacques Cousteau at a party a given at her family home in Paris where they were living after WWII.
Simone Cousteau spent forty years aboard the Calypso, the majority of that time serving as captain of the ship while Jacques traveled the globe giving lectures and promoting his movies and books trying to fulfill his insatiable ego.

By the end of the war his wife, Simone, was already an accomplished diver; Cousteau even fashioned miniature aqua-lungs for their two sons, Jean-Michel, born in 1938, and Philippe, born in 1940.

The reviewer's choice of words angered me. Because the language suggests that gender is a useful lens through which we can analyse or assess writing skills.
Finally, I completely and utterly reject the suggestion that women writers are in a different category (or league) from men, and therefore need to be held to different standards of excellence.
Because if someone had said a (fill in the ethnicity) is the best (repreat the ethnicity) writer (or artist, etc), they'd be roundly vilified for being bigoted.
