The ‘Dante Symphony’ is based on the poetic masterpiece by Dante Alighieri and has two movements: ‘Inferno’ and ‘Purgatory’, charting the jjourney of the soul toward Paradise, with some of the musical ideas taken directly from Dante’s text.
All Martinu’s symphonies were written in the USA, where he arrived in 1941 as a fugtive from the Nazis, and their success was immediate as the works were taken up by some of the finest conductors of the time, although they have since been unjustly neglected.

Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. That Mozart was legendary in the combination of rapidity and perfection in so many of his masterpieces is hardly news, and to remind a reader of the famous fact that all three of his final symphonies were composed in scarcely two months’ time seems a cliché.
But these last three symphonies seemed to pour out of him inexorably and in a rush of structural perfection and expressive depths; biographical sleuthing has unearthed nothing more than the chance that one or more of Symphonies 39-41 might be performed for profit within six months of their completion.
Edvard Grieg, in a nearly-forgotten essay commented, "In the G-minor Symphony Mozart shows himself to us in all his grace and sincerity of feeling." And biographer Marcia Davenport puts all three of the symphonies into a larger perspective: "The remarkable feature of his development is not the romantic one…but the plain matter of the instrumentation.

The best known of all Britten's orchestral music must be the Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, more commonly known as The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra,a work that is both a tribute to the great 17th century English composer Henry Purcell and a useful teaching instrument.
Simple Symphony is a staple in String Orchestral literature.

What the Simple Symphony offers, is charming thematic material from Britten’s childhood (all the themes were composed between the ages of 9 and 12) developed by the sophisticated composer of 20 years.
The Simple Symphony is in four movements, each of which has a descriptive and alliterative title.
He joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra at 21 and became principal trumpet of the London Philharmonic at 24, but he left orchestral playing at 27 to devote himself to composition.

"This 'Simple Symphony' is entirely based on material from works which the composer wrote between the ages of nine and twelve," he noted in the published score.
In form, the symphony's four movements approximate classical shapes and key relationships, though in miniature - sonata form movements first and last, framing a scherzo and a slow movement.

Benjamin Britten was the foremost British composer of the 20th century, a creative genius in virtually every musical genre, but especially noted for almost single-handedly reviving opera with his masterpieces, Peter Grimes and Billy Budd.
Over the next few months, while deciding what directions his career might take, he rummaged through piles of his childhood musical sketches and decided to arrange several of them for string orchestra, an ensemble for which he was to develop an abiding fondness.

Unlike the Symphony in C, this work holds together quite well, and is a little masterpiece — not his greatest work, perhaps, but a symphony worth repeated listenings and no small amount of praise.
But his Third Symphony is the first of his that I truly love, and it is also the first of his that shows his genius for form and orchestration.
It is a string symphony of a very sombre cast, adding the trumpet only at the end, as the mood lifts from darkness to the light of an affirming chorale (an original melody with Honegger, not a quotation).

As any student string player will tell you, Britten's Simple Symphony (originally conceived for school string groups) is not exactly "simple", at least regarding the individual technique required to play it well, not to mention the ensemble precision its four varied movements demands.
Tempo is key (don't rush!) and dynamic contrast and energy in the bowing also are important components of a successful rendering of this attractive, idiomatic, and cleverly inventive work.
