Heuristic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heuristic is the art and science of discovery and invention.
Heuristics are intended to gain computational performance or conceptual simplicity potentially at the cost of accuracy or precision.
In heuristic evaluation, the user interface is reviewed by experts and it's compliance to ten usability heuristics (broadly stated characteristics of a good user interface) is assessed and any violating aspects are recorded.

Heuristic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
It is different from an algorithm in that it merely serves as a rule of thumb or guideline, as opposed to an invariant procedure.
In philosophy, especially in its Continental European kind, the adjective "heuristic" (or the designation "heuristic device") is used when an entity X is there to understand or to find out about some other entity Y, with which X is not identical.
In computer science, a heuristic is a technique designed to solve a problem that ignores whether the solution is provably correct, but which usually produces a good solution or solves a simpler problem that contains or intersects with the solution of the more complex problem.

Web Site for Perfectly Random Sampling with Markov Chains:
Results from simulations using a C computer program are reported; these confirm the practicality of this approach in both attractive and repulsive cases.
We present an informal heuristic for the existence of an efficient coupling, and justify the heuristic by proving rigorous results and examples in the contexts of finite reversible Markov chains and of reflecting Brownian motion in planar domains.
This is because the computational requirement for simulating such samples increases exponentially with the selection rate, and also due to the need to be able to simulate a sample of size 1 from the population at equilibrium.

20th WCP: The Simulation Theory and Explanations that ‘Make Sense of Behavior’
The merits of the theory theory and the simulation theory are usually discussed in relation to the practice of the prediction of intentional behavior.
Since simulation theory is founded on the premise that there is no body of internally-represented commonsense psychological knowledge, and consequently no laws in which it is represented, appealing to the covering law model of causal explanation is not an option.
What simulation needs in order to substantiate assumptions A and B is a causal account of folk psychological explanation whose satisfaction conditions either involve simulation essentially or, if they do not, are at least compatible with simulation as an heuristic device for picking out what is the most likely to be the correct causal explanation.

Simulation can thus prove to be a simple alternative; it has the advantages of being useful in the study of both steady state and transient (dynamic) system behavior.
Simulation studies performed in this fashion are widely prevalent in the literature and have had positive results in many areas including floor layout, dispatch rule evaluation, batch sizing, and line balancing.
In this example, all of the heuristics are conservative except one; the heuristic implemented in the subgoal module in the upper middle of Figure 9.

Simulation systems for modeling multi-object and multi- process systems can be the complex systems built on multiple computers, or processors..
CAE simulators also simulate sound and motion, including the banking and turning of the aircraft, accelerations, and the feel of tires as they roll across the bumps and cracks in the runway.
Each simulator recreates the operational characteristics of a specific type of aircraft as well as the conditions, normal or abnormal, that a pilot may encounter, such as for example, a smoke in the cockpit.

Franziska Kluegl and Ana L. C. Bazzan: Route Decision Behaviour in a Commuting Scenario   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Agents start with a heuristic value equal to 0.5 (that means, equal probability to select both routes), and a value for the initial rewards equal to 0, except in the experiment where there was an adaptation in every round.
According to the reward-function (equation 3), the ideal final value of heuristics should be 0.667 (this corresponds to two-thirds of the drivers selecting the main route, while one-third uses the secondary route).
Quality of forecast: The "simulation" of the effects of the drivers' first decision is exact, as the same formula was used for computing the prognosis of reward.

Accounting For Randomness In Heuristic Simulation Optimization - Boesel, Nelson (ResearchIndex)
Abstract: Research on the optimization of stochastic systems via simulation often centers on the development of algorithms for which global convergence can be guaranteed.
Applications of optimization via simulation, on the other hand, typically involve search heuristics that have been successful in deterministic settings.
Search heuristics give up on global convergence in order to be more generally applicable and to yield rapid progress toward good solutions.

The computational simulation with dynamically interacting heterogeneous agents is expected to reproduce complex phenomena in economics, and helps us to experiment various controlling methods, to evaluate systematic designs, and to extract the fundamental elements which produce the interesting phenomena for future analytical works.

Controlling the flow of air traffic into and out of airports is important to satisfy the ever-growing demand for air transportation and reduce aircraft delays at airports.
This paper describes an approach using simulation as a tool to analyze the arrival and departure processes at airports.
The approach involves the construction of a simulation model of the airport’s departure and arrival processes that can be used to compare different scenarios such as schedule changes or runway closures.

In this work the performance of a DTN is analyzed in the case of scheduled message delivery, with particular consideration to the different message delivery delays and to the usage of buffers that store a message during its propagation from its source to the destination.
The results of simulations on a simplified urban setting show that K2 reduces buffer usage while maintaining delivery delays approximately unchanged when compared to MFF.
Simulations also suggest that adding a DTN-like message forwarding architecture with mobile access points to an existing fixed infrastructure can be an effective way to improve wireless coverage for delay-tolerant end-user applications such as e-mail, message passing and news broadcast.

interdisciplines : What Do Mirror Neurons Mean?
The mirror system is sometimes considered to represent a primitive version, or possibly a precursor in phylogeny, of a simulation heuristic that might underlie mindreading.
A broad notion of simulation, however, which includes mirror mechanisms as a special case, might well work.
Although the existence of such neurons does indeed suggest that the representation of executed and observed actions may share neural resources, simulation theories also assert that the understanding of observed actions is achieved *by virtue* of this shared representation.
