Simulations Publications, Inc., or SPI, was a publisher of wargames, science fiction and fantasy boardgames, and roleplaying games that went bankrupt in 1982, with most of its assets passing to TSR, Inc., the publishers of Dungeons and Dragons.
They were extracted from mentions in the magazines, and may be off by a few months from actual publication dates, as when the magazines went to press you weren't always sure exactly whether a game would hit its ship date.

 Realism v. Playability
There was a time when Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) seemed to feel that simultaneous movement - and the tedious order-writing their brand of "SiMov" required - and randomly disobedient units were required by realism.
In a hopelessly narrow sense, a game stops simulating the battle as it was actually fought as soon as a single piece is moved to a location never occupied by the real army / regiment / platoon to which it corresponds.
Science-fiction and fantasy games may not appear to be "simulations" at all, but even those with the sketchiest of backgrounds all attempt to evoke - for the duration of play, at least - a separate reality.

In fact, chess was originally designed as a conflict simulation, but over the years it has changed into a pure strategy game having no relation to reality.

If you try translating just about any simulation board game to The Operational Art of War, you will find that your units will be exposed to taking additional heavy casualties for trying to stack as much as what was allowed historically.

One of the biggest drawbacks for a budding publisher in 1978 was the lack of magazines and other marketing vehicles dedicated to computer games.
The game was called Temple of Apshai and was written initially for the TRS-80, then the PET and finally converted to the Apple II by a third party.
The direction of the games was decidedly different from the strategy and RPG-oriented offerings of Automated Simulations, but some of Epyx's best-loved games came from this period.

As for wargames, while the earliest wargames were multi-sided abstract representations of combat, modern wargames require multiple sides that compete within a simulation of an armed conflict.
These wargames were truly comprehensive, with industrialists brought in to advise on the speed of industrial mobilization, attachés brought back from their assigned countries to play those country’s militaries realistically, and diplomats integrating their actions with the militaries.
Apparently using a working definition of any multisided simulation of armed conflict, in 1987 John Prados estimated 1 Billion was being spent annually throught the defense establishment on wargames and wargaming..

Hexwar has followed in the footsteps of Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) by treating Napoleon at Waterloo as a recruiting vehicle and allowing nonsubscribers unlimited free test drives.
Easy access, longevity in service, simplicity, historical notoriety and sheer popularity (due to taut play balance) should have made it the most bulletproof of games.
Involvement at this level of minutia in a 30 year old simulation will strike many as absurd; particularly because it barely alters game play or results.

Times were fairly lean until the mid-nineties, when a crowd of true war-game titles exploded onto the scene.
The flash point of this explosion was Panzer General (Strategic Simulations, Inc. [SSI], 1995), which combined a remarkably intuitive user interface with a game engine that had enough depth and "chrome" to attract even serious war gamers.
This is patently unrealistic and makes simulation of rigidly commanded armies, like those of the Arabs or Warsaw Pact, difficult to simulate.

There is a segment of board gaming in which historical battles [and even fantasy wars - not only historical what-if's but science fiction conflicts too,] are depicted, using terrain maps and little square cardboard counters representing the historical military units [brigades, divisions, etc.] which fought.
Known simply as wargaming, or simulation gaming, the hobby has been around since the late 1950's, when Charles Roberts invented the game called Tactics.
In the 1970's wargame publishing exploded with the addition of Simulations Publications, Inc. [SPI,] Game Designers Workshop [GDW,] and many others.
