Hilliers says "This beautiful Bamboo, undoubtedly one of the best in cultivation, was introduced from China in 1913 by Ernest Wilson, after whose daughter, Muriel, it was subsequently named."
In August of 1984 botanist Tom Soderstorm told us he felt it should be called a Sinarundinaria whereas Richard Haubrich grouped it with Thamnocalamus.
The Zhejiang Forestry Institute in China published a journal in 1988 which states the plant was originally named Fargesia in 1893 by the French botanist Franchet and then goes on to define 76 species of the genus.

Bamboo diversity and conservation in India - Sas Biswas
The occurrence of temperate type of forests at lower altitudes in Shillong Plateau may be attributed to the fact that climatic factors with regard to altitude vary from one mountain to the others (Biswas 1988).
The principal species are represented by Chimonobambusa (Sinarundinaria) callosa, C. jaunsarensis, Drepanostachyum (Thamnocalamus) falcatum, D. hookerianum, D. intermedium, D. polystachyum, Himalayacalamus falconeri, Neomicrocalamus (Racemobambos) prainii, Arundinaria (Sinarundinaria) rolloana, Phyllostachys bambusoides, Semiarundinaria (Sinarundinaria) pantlingii, Sinobambusa elegans, Thamnocalamus aristatus and T.
Further it is striking to find that an appreciable number of lesser-known bamboos are grown by the indigenous communities living in and around the key areas of conservation.
