Sincelejo is the capital city of the department of Sucre in Colombia.
Sincelejo was founded with the name San Francisco de Asís de Sincelejo on October 4, 1535, the saint day of Francis of Assisi.
The main economic activity of the municipality of Sincelejo is cattle raising making the city the center of commerce and services for the area.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) allowed Juan to return to his family on Tuesday, December 30th after Colombian Mennonite Church leaders helped to negotiate a ransom with the kidnappers.
Both the 35th Front of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Jaime Bateman Cayon Front of the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla groups are believed to operate in the area.

Nearly three million people have been internally displaced in Colombia as a result of armed conflict and approximately 8-12 million citizens live in absolute poverty.  On average, more than 19 people per day disappear, or are assassinated or killed in combat because of the political violence. 
On 29 August, the military indiscriminately opened fire to nearby adolescents and later beat nearby Franciscan friars.  This example of military interference is common among the widespread violence in Colombia.
