A Sinclair QL The Sinclair QL (for Quantum Leap), was a personal computer launched by Sinclair Research in January 1984, as the successor to the ZX Spectrum.
The QL was the first mass-market personal computer based on the Motorola 68000-series processor family to be released, beating the Apple Macintosh by a month, and the Atari ST by a year.
QLs buit by Samsung for export markets had DE-9 sockets for the RS-232 and joystick ports, instead of the unusual and UK-specific BS 6312 sockets found on UK-built QLs.

These were the mass storage drives of the QL, in which you would insert little cartridges, containing a long (5 m) loop of magnetic tape running quite fast (70 cm/s) under a head similar to that of a normal tape recorder.

On the Sinclair QL I continued to program in assembly (the QL BASIC (SuperBasic) was ok, but I wasn't interested), and I wrote various more-or-less useless programs (ranging from a FORTH compiler and an editor-assembler system of my own to Pac-Man to a MSDOS compatible floppy disk driver).
The QL was a fun machine, but there weren't very many of them in Finland, and although I was generally happy to write my own programs (still am), it did teach me to buy hardware that actually is supported.

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum was a small home computer released in the United Kingdom in 1982 by Sinclair Research.
After Amstrad's buyout of Sinclair Research in 1986, two more versions were released: the ZX Spectrum +2 (with a built-in cassette recorder, like the Amstrad CPC 464) and the ZX Spectrum +3 (with a built-in 3-inch floppy disk drive, like the Amstrad CPC 6128).
Several peripherals for the Spectrum were marketed by Sinclair: the printer was already on the market, as the Spectrum had retained the protocol for the ZX81's printer.

The QL (Quantum Leap) was announced early 1984 and the first machines were delivered may 1984.
This was called the "klutge", later models had the extra ROM built inside the machine, it was piggy backed on top of one of the two other ROM's and after that, they used one 32Kb and one 16Kb ROM.
The Motorola 68008 processor was a 8/16/32 bit processor it had a 8 bit databus, a 20 bit address bus and most of the instructions were 32bit.
