Council of Elrond :: LotR News and Information
The Sindar were also referred to as the Grey-Elves, perhaps because they were neither Elves of the Light (Calaquendi) or of the Dark (Moriquendi), since they did answer the summons of the Valar but did not reach Aman.
The Sindar were split between two main countries - the realm of Doriath which was ruled by Thingol and Melian, and Falas under the lordship of CĂrdan the Shipwright.
Although the Sindar had a deep love for Middle-earth, they could not be content once the desire of the sea awoke in them.

“Sindar ‘Grey-elves’ (Q.) The Grey-elves of Middle-earth, one of the three kindreds of the Eldar, and of all the Eldarin peoples the only one to refuse the Great Journey, choosing instead to remain in Middle-earth, Which they dearly loved.
For years unacciounted the Sindar dwelt in Beleriand in peace and happiness- a state which, if less exalted than that of their High-elven kin, far across the sea, was no less pleasant a mode of existence.
His name was Melchar, but the Grey-elves called him Morgoth (it is Sindarin in form), and with the arrival in Middle-earth the long peace of the Sindar came to an end.In fear of the pursuit that followed, Morgoth built a mighty realm somewhat to the north of Beleriand.

Sindar and other MPs (military police) who served at Abu Ghraib blamed weak senior officers for failing to set clear standards for poorly trained and war-weary soldiers in their treatment of Iraqi detainees and for not restraining U.S. bullies.
In one instance, Sindar recalled a 14-year-old Iraqi with a broken arm being hurled to the ground and then mocked by U.S. soldiers as the boy wept and wet himself in the prison intake center.
Sindar, a nuclear, biological and chemical weapons specialist who was pressed into MP duty, said soldiers know the rules of engagement and were given a brief lesson in Iraqi culture before they left for the Middle East, but nothing when it came to their jobs at the prison.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Sindar
Before the return of the Noldor to Middle-earth, the Sindar were found in most parts of Beleriand; all claimed Elwë; (known as Thingol in the Sindarin tongue) as their high king.
There were two main countries of the Sindar, however; in Doriath under the rule of Thingol and Melian, and in the Falas, under the lordship of Círdan the Shipwright.
For two ages, the Sindar dwelt in peace and plenty; they roamed throughout Beleriand, from the shorelands of the Falas in the west to the Blue Mountains in the east, and all owned Thingol as their lord and king.

Sindar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The Sindar are "grey" perhaps because they were not precisely Elves of the Light, never having actually set foot in Valinor, but neither were they Elves of Darkness, since they did accept the invitation and set out on the journey (and therefore were technically counted among the Eldar).
The Teleri of Eglador, the northlands, and the Falas were collectively known as the Sindar, or Grey Elves, in later days, because they developed a civilisation all its own, which almost equalled that of the Calaquendi or Light Elves of Valinor.
The language of the Sindar diverged from common Telerin over the long ages they were sundered from their kin, and became known as Sindarin.

As a result, the Sindar of Doriath were very well armed, both with the weapons made by the Dwarves, those of their own making, and those that were given to King Thingol as a gift from Valinor.
Another useful item that the Sindar of Doriath were likely to have in their possession is the Elven cloaks, which are mostly known to us as the cloaks of Lorien, which proved so useful to the Fellowship.
The thing is that in realms like Gondolin, Sindar were the majority and affected Noldorin culture to the greater extent than Noldorin culture affected them (the adoption of Sindarin language as the language of all Elves of Beleriand is the example of such influence).

The Grey Havens - Middle-earth: Nandorin - the Green-elven tongue   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Concerning the relationship between the Green-elven and Grey-elven tongues, it is stated that "although the dialects of the Silvan Elves, when they again met their long separated kindred, had so far diverged from Sindarin as to be hardly intelligible, little study was needed to reveal their kinship as Eldarin tongues" (UT:257).
Some of the Sindar that came to Thranduil's realm escaping the destruction of Doriath adopted the Nandorin tongue and took names of Silvan form and style, just like the Noldor had adapted their Quenya names to Sindarin centuries earlier.
These Sindar "wished indeed to become Silvan folk and to return, as they said, to the simple life natural to the Elves before the invitation of the Valar had disturbed it" (UT:259).

It's made obvious there that Oropher and his small band of Sindar merged themselves completely with the Silvan people of the Wood, leaving behind their Sindarin inheritance.
