Sinfonia Concertante in E minor for Cello and Orchestra, Op.
Prokofiev scored this composition for solo cello and an orchestra of two flutes and piccolo, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets (a third player can be used on an ad libitum basis), three trombones, tuba, timpani and other percussion, celesta and strings.
Prokofiev completed his Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra in 1952, but the work’s origin can be traced back nearly two decades earlier.

Sinfonia concertante - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sinfonia concertante is a musical form that originated in the classical music era, and is a mixture of the symphony and the concerto genres:
Prokofiev called his work for cello and orchestra Symphony-Concerto, stressing its serious symphonic character, in contrast to the light character of the Classical period sinfonia concertante.
The concerto for orchestra differs from the sinfonia concertante in that concertos for orchestra have no soloist or group of soloists that remains the same throughout the composition.

Sergei Prokofiev's Cello Concerto No. 2 in E Minor, written between 1950 and 1952, is a large-scale work for Cello and Orchestra.
Prokofiev dedicated it to Mstislav Rostropovich, who premiered it on February 18, 1952 with Sviatoslav Richter conducting.
His work was disparaged as bourgeois and formalistic, and his first wife was convicted as a spy and taken to a forced-labor camp.

Symphony-Concerto (Prokofiev) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto in E minor (sometimes also called Sinfonia Concertante), is a large-scale work for cello and orchestra.
Prokofiev dedicated it to Mstislav Rostropovich, who premiered it on February 18, 1952 with Sviatoslav Richter conducting (the only instance of Richter conducting).
Since the Central Committee decision on February 10th, 1948, Prokofiev was considered a "suspect" musician.

Michael Tilson Thomas and the orchestra are exceptionally well-suited to this repertoire and the indefatigable cellist Lynn Harrell was soloist in the Prokofiev.
Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante, for cello and orchestra, is an effective but rather long, convoluted work, with an equally long and convoluted history.
Inspired by Rostropovich, who soon became his close friend, student and champion, Prokofiev began work on a series of substantial revisions, the last of which was finished in 1952, just a few months before his death in March, 1953.

This Sinfonia Concertante is the very opposite of "minimal music"; at the risk of seeming to pun, one might almost call it "maximal".
The early Sinfonia (1962) pointed the way, while the electrifying A Mirror of Whitening Light (1977), strictly speaking for chamber ensemble with single strings, showed that the medium is something he views with no less intensity.
The Sinfonia Concertante is the first of three works, not musically linked, but all for chamber orchestra and thus indicative of a renewed commitment to the medium.

 Conversation with Mstislav Rostropovich
Rostropovich was soloist in the premieres of Prokofiev's second Cello Concerto in 1952, Shostakovich's two Cello Concertos in 1959 and 1966, Britten's Cello Symphony in 1964 and Bliss's Cello Concerto in 1970.
Rostropovich was a close friend of Sergei Prokofiev and was the inspiration behind the LSO's Sergei Prokofiev: The Centenary Festival 1991, featuring orchestral and chamber music, and the world premiere of a cello fugue dedicated to Rostropovich.
Prokofiev was in the audience and he came up to me afterwards and said, "I think there is some good material in the piece, but I don't like its shape.

If Shafran's white-hot reading of Prokofiev comfortably survives comparison with Rostropovich's two commercial accounts, his Kabalevsky (of which he was the dedicatee) is finer still - a fitting companion to his classic première recording of the first Concerto on Revelation, also with the composer conducting.

Nevertheless it is rife with Prokofiev's keen fantasy and romantic edginess.
The orchestral part is rendered with the depth of character invited by Prokofiev's writing but that strength of character is not projected by the soloist.

Never fully at home in the W., Prokofiev re-visited Russia in 1927 and 1929 and returned there to live in 1933, choosing an inopportune moment when the doctrine of ‘socialist realism’ in the arts had just been propounded.
Though regarded as impossibly dissonant and avant-garde in his youth, Prokofiev can now be seen as in the direct line of Russ.

Symphony performance so fresh, the familiar seemed new
The indisputable addition was Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante (or "Symphony-Concerto," depending on the translation) for Cello and Orchestra, that big and intractable fruit of the composer's late collaboration with the young Mstislav Rostropovich.
Completed in 1952, a year before the composer's death, the Sinfonia Concertante draws on material from the E-Minor Cello Concerto of two decades earlier, and its enormous technical demands and dramatic fervency are essentially a tribute to the gifts of the 26-year-old Rostropovich.
On one hand are those who savor the score's thematic abundance and plain-spoken rhetoric; on the other are those who hear mostly diffuseness and (as with much of Prokofiev's late work) a pallid shadow of his earlier melodic genius.

Prokofiev's Sinfonia concertante has its supporters and detractors, but I have always fallen somewhere in the middle: I want to like it but the piece never has really worked for me. In particular, Rostropovich's unequalled intensity in the solo part always has been compromised by soft-edged or unsatisfactory accompaniments (or recordings).
Now if you have always loved this piece or think the above observations are simply nonsense, you can ignore all of the forgoing; but if you have yet to be won over or, like me, have been essentially sitting on the fence waiting for an epiphany, this performance may offer just the ticket.
The finale similarly achieves an all-too-rare feeling of inexorability, with Pappano holding nothing back in the closing pages as the orchestra brass propel the soloist into her highest register for the remarkable final bars.

Cellist Misha Maisky and conductor Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra are hardly strangers to Prokofiev's quirky, musical ironies and thus make a strong case for a work which was poorly received by the Soviet government and public at its première (the earlier incarnation as the Concerto for Cello, op.
