List of singer-songwriters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This list includes performers who are not singer-songwriters in the traditional sense, but who both write and perform songs in other genres.
This list enumerates people who record and perform in the traditional singer-songwriter approach.
These performers write their own material, accompany themselves on guitar or keyboards, usually perform solo or with limited and understated accompaniment, and are known as much or more for their songwriting skills as for their performance abilities.

 Prater, Lorena
One is a cover of Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou," the music of which is well within the range of this super fine young singer; no sign of strain hitting those high notes or dropping to pick up the low ones.
This song was first done by the composer herself and then done again by such notable singers as Joan Baez and Roberta Flack.
The list of other writers on the album includes one of my other favorites, Kim Richey (teamed with Nashville favorite Angelo), and the Richey song covered here is also one of my favorites, "To Tell Truth," which Lorena makes all new by doing the entire vocal in Spanish instead of English.

Salett sharpens songwriting through film gigs By Ron Wynn, rwynn@nashvillecitypaper.com July 01, 2004 Singer/songwriter Peter Salett may be the most prolific composer for films who doesn't really specialize in the medium.
Some songs were cut in Austin, others in either Los Angeles or New York, and Salett teamed with producer Craig Ross for a work that continually experiments and shifts styles and genres, but still has a unified sound thanks to Salett's accomplished vocals and solos.

 Singer-songwriter
While there is some debate over the claim, it is worthy to note that many former bandmembers (including Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul Simon, Peter Frampton, and later Don Henley and Glenn Frey) found success as singer-songwriters in their later careers.
It can be argued that some bands of the era - most notably the Beatles and the wave of artists on both sides of the Atlantic that followed in their wake - fit the definition of singer-songwriters, with most or all of their members taking an active role in the songwriting process.
People who had been primarily songwriters, notably Carole King, also began releasing work as performers.

Austin, Texas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 1970s, Austin became a refuge for a group of Country and Western musicians and songwriters seeking to escape the music industry's corporate domination of Nashville.
The best-known artist in this group was Willie Nelson, who became an icon for what became the city's "alternate music industry." The Armadillo World Headquarters gained a national reputation during the 1970s as a venue for these anti-establishment musicians as well as mainstream acts.
Other globally well known companies, such as Hoover's, Inc., a business research and publishing company, are headquartered in the city.

Stoltz has a harder edge than Smith, and his pop tastes often lean in more of a psychedelic direction, but his simpler songs, like the straightforwardly gorgeous "Jewel of the Evening", are a great jumping-on point for Smiths fans eager to skew their tastes in a post-Beatles direction.
Arthur qualifies as a songwriter, but "Daddy on Prozac" and "In the Sun" seem to reek of self-destructive tendencies.
