Single document interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In graphical user interfaces, a single document interface or SDI is a method of organizing graphical user interface applications into individual windows that the operating system's window manager handles separately.
A window does not have a "background" or "parent" window containing its menu or toolbar; instead, each window contains its own menu or toolbar.
Applications which allow the editing of more than one document at a time, e.g.

This page is a second (or third) attempt to explain the differences between MDI (Multiple Document Interface) as used in Word97 and earlier, SDI (Single Document Interface), and MSDI (Multiple Single Document Interface) as used in AbiWord.
This document is an attempt to explain a little about how or why each style evolved, what advantages and disadvantages each has, why AbiWord uses the MSDI, and discuss some of the ramifications to the user.
Note, however, that if you have the same document open in both of these instances, changes made to one instance will not be made to the other instance, and, in fact your changes may be lost if you save and close both instances in the wrong order.

Multiple document interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Graphical computer applications with a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) are those whose all windows reside under a single parent window (usually with the exception of modal windows), as opposed to all windows being separate from each other (single document interface).
In the usability community, there has been much debate over which interface type is preferable.
With MDI (and also TDI), a single menu bar and/or toolbar is shared between all child windows, reducing clutter and increasing efficient use of screenspace.

Many child windows do not fill up the OS task management interface, as they are hierarchically organised.
MDI child windows behave differently from those in single document interface applications, requiring users to learn two subtly different windowing concepts.

But as soon as the programmer decides that a change should affect all open documents running under the application, the Pure SDI model breaks, for under that model, applications are separate; and changing something in one of them may not in any way affect what happens in another.
This is not an MDI interface; it is an SDI interface that uses a controlling mechanism.
If Gimp-1.1 were a KDE application, each document window would have its own menu and toolbar, and the control window would contain the global configuration menu, a list of the documents currently open, or possibly a simple splashscreen in the style of Wordperfect 8.

How to Use Advanced Windows Forms - WebReference.com-
A single document interface (SDI) is an interface that displays a single document or other encapsulated data within a single form.
More generally, a single document interface presents a single concept in a single window to the user, be it a photo album, a paper document, a tax form, or some other concept.
Single document interfaces typically provide a menu bar to open, save, and otherwise manipulate the concept; a status bar to summarize information related to the presented information; and one or more toolbars as an alternate way to manipulate the data.

SDI or Single Document Interface is often used when the interface of an object or application can be expressed using a single primary window (a TextEditor) with secondary windows for supplemental tasks (a FontDialog).
MDI uses a single primary window, called a parent window, to visually contain a set of related documents or child windows.
Documents so initialized will automatically be constrained to our contentView and support complex MDI behavior.

MDI is a Microsoft Windows programming interface for creating an application that enables users to work with multiple documents at the same time.
The user can see and work with different documents such as a spreadsheet, a text document, or a drawing space by simply moving the cursor from one space to another.
MDI applications can be used for a variety of purposes - for example, working on one document while referring to another document, viewing different presentations of the same information, viewing multiple Web sites at the same time, and any task that requires multiple reference points and work areas at the same time.
