The Single UNIX Specification, Version 3 - Overview
The core of the Single UNIX Specification, Version 3, collectively known as the Base Specifications, was developed, and is maintained, by a joint working group of members of the IEEE Portable Applications Standards Committee, members of The Open Group, and members of ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1.
The approach to specification development was one of ``write once, adopt everywhere'', with the resulting set of specifications being approved as IEEE Std 1003.1-2001 (POSIX), ISO/IEC 9945:2002 (parts 1 to 4), and The Open Group Base Specifications, Issue 6.
Specifically, the scope of this work excluded doing any ``new'' work, but rather collecting into a single document what had been spread across a number of documents, and presenting it in what had been proven in practice to be a more effective way.

Single UNIX Specification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Single UNIX Specification (SUS) is the collective name of a family of standards for computer operating systems to qualify for the name "Unix".
Unix was selected as the basis for a standard system interface partly because it was manufacturer-neutral.
The near-equivalent SUS became more popular with the involvement of several major vendors in the wake of the Unix wars because it was available for free, whereas the IEEE charged a substantial fee for access to the POSIX specification.

Unix - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
UNIX is a portable, multi-tasking and multi-user computer operating system originally developed by a group of AT&T Bell Labs employees including Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and Douglas McIlroy.
The UNIX trademark and the certification rights were sold to the X/Open Consortium, which was an industry group to define a "UNIX Standard".
The term "Unix" is also used, and in fact was the original capitalisation, but the name UNIX stuck because, in the words of Dennis Ritchie ", we had just acquired a new typesetter and were intoxicated by being able to produce small caps" (quoted from the Jargon File, version 4.3.3, 20 September 2002).

USENIX ;login: - Single UNIX Specification, Version 2
Since the specifications were based on existing practice and the predominant data model did not change during this gestation period, some dependencies upon the ILP32 data model were inadvertently incorporated into the final specifications.
The UNIX development community is driven technically by a set of API agreements embodied in standards and specifications documents from groups such as X/Open, IEEE, ANSI, and ISO.
When it was understood that the Single UNIX Specification was constraining system implementations that were other than ILP32, the relevant specifications were reviewed and recommendations drafted to make these specifications data size- and architecture-neutral.

POSIX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since the IEEE charges very high rates for POSIX documentation and does not allow on-line publication of the standards, there has been a tendency toward the "Single UNIX Specification" standard, which is open, accepts input from anyone, and is freely available on the Internet.
Beginning in 1998 a joint working group, the Austin Group, began to develop a combined standard that would be known as the Single UNIX Specification Version 3.
For example, Microsoft Windows NT complies with the real-time part of the POSIX specification and the LynxOS real-time operating system (RTOS) for embedded applications is also POSIX-conformant.

 Unix Standards
The Unix standards that evolved after 1985 were quite successful at this — so much so that they serve as valuable documentation of the API of modern Unix implementations.
The original motivation for the development of Unix standards was the split between the ATandT and Berkeley lines of development that we examined in Chapter 2.
Later Unix standards also tended to track System V except in areas where BSD facilities were clearly functionally superior (thus, for example, modern Unix standards describe the System V terminal controls rather than the BSD interface to the same facilities).

Their guidelines require "UNIX" to be presented in uppercase or otherwise distinguished from the surrounding text, strongly encourage using it as a branding adjective for a generic word such as "system", and discourage its use in hyphenated phrases.
Other parties frequently disregard these guidelines, wilfully treating "Unix" as a generic noun or descriptor for operating systems that are not necessarily covered by the "UNIX" trademark, in much the same way that "Band-Aid" is used in reference to any bandage or "Xerox" to any photocopier.

Still, the Single UNIX Specification leaves a lot for the individual software vendors to embellish, since it doesn't address all system requirements.

Test your source code by looking for usage for the Single UNIX Specification interfaces noted below, setting the date on your system to the year 2000, and executing the code (Warning it is recommended that such tests are run on a testbed system and not on a live production system).
There are some interfaces within the Single UNIX Specification which can use two digit notation for year values, these are highlighted below together with recommendations on how the two digit dates should be interpreted.
If century is not specified, then values in the range [69-99] refer to years in the twentieth century (1969 to 1999 inclusive), and values in the range [00-68] refer to years in the twenty-first century (2000 to 2068 inclusive).
