Single-issue politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bringing together political forces based on a single intellectual or cultural common denominator can be unrealistic; though there may be considerable public opinion on one side of an argument, it does not necessarily follow that mobilizing under that one banner will bring results.
The term single-issue voter has been used to describe voters who make decisions on who to vote for in many instances based on the candidates stance on a single issue such as whether they are "pro-life" or "pro-choice" or whether they support gun rights or gun-control.
The existence of single issue voters can give the false impression that a candidate's overall views is supported to a greater degree then in reality.

Progressive Commons: Focus: What's So Wrong with Single Issue Voting?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Single issue voting, in its near-plebeian desire to reduce a complex world to a series of simple absolutes is likely to create disastrous outcomes precisely because it ignores the ways in which issues interconnect.
And this is where the arguments against single issue voting stop making sense, not because single issue voting is a good idea or even an activity without consequence, but because criticizing single issue voting requires us to take a step back and really assess what kind of voting and voting system we want.
But I'm struck with the idea that, given the inevitability of the single issue, the most important political strategem should be one of "assigning priorities for consumption," in effect letting voters know which single issue should be their single issue.

These single issue papers were able to relate to the particular and special area of greatest relevance to women's personal or professional lives, politically, socially, and economically.
The issue was not as serious a problem to mass media as it was to the women who faced it, and therefore women stressed the necessity to speak for themselves on these concerns.
Media, as a single issue, itself was the subject of at least 86 women's periodicals arising between 1968 and 1983 and probably had a greater influence on extending the women's movement and women's communication than any other of the single group of issues, excepting possibly education.
