Single-issue politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Very visible as it was in Western democracies in the second half of the twentieth century, single-issue politics is hardly a new phenomenon.
Single-issue politics involves political campaigning or political support based on one essential policy area or idea.
William Gladstone made British politics in practical terms single-issue, around the Home Rule Bill, leading to a split of the Liberal Party.

 Single issue politics
Single issue politics was very visible in the second half of the twentieth century, in the Western democracies.
Single issue politics is political campaigning based on one essential policy area or idea, for example abortion or taxation.
In the 1880s, the third government of William Gladstone, in practical terms, made British politics single-issue around the Home Rule Bill, leading to a split of the Liberal Party (UK).

Excerpt from The New Right: We’re Ready to Lead by Richard A
Single issue groups are the result and not the reason for the decline of political parties.
It usually does not have as many members or supporters as single issue groups because its ranks are made up of individuals who are solidly conservative across the board.
Coalition politics is as old as the United States of America.

Lords Hansard text for 17 May 1995 (150517-06)
Single issue pressure groups perform the essential task of drawing the attention of the public, and of the Government, to issues and factors which might otherwise be overlooked or disregarded.
The pattern of single issue groups and pressure groups, protest groups and so forth whose role is to try to move government policy to their view, is one of bewildering profusion and overlap and is too varied for simple classification.
The single issue groups concentrating on a single issue are apt to obtain an inordinate influence—in other words, an influence in achieving objectives which are not really acceptable to the bulk of their fellow citizens.

Right To Life: Single issue or disqualifying issue?
Single issue groups have always played an important role in American politics from the colonists' single issue of "taxation without representation" to the abolitionists' single issue of slavery to the Vietnam War protesters.
Of course not, because that single issue is important enough to disqualify a candidate.
Pro-lifers, especially in an election year, are often attacked as being single issue voters.

SINGLE ISSUE POLITICS: WHEN ONE ISSUE IS PARAMOUNT
Writing about "Single Issue Politics," for World magazine, John Piper, senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, said that a pro-life candidate may do a poor job once he wins an elected office.
Some would argue that an election campaign is more than one single issue, but after all factors have been considered, a candidate who supports the murder of unborn children will never receive my vote, no matter what other issues he or she supports.
And there are definitely single issues which should immediately disqualify a candidate — support of dishonesty and corporate fraud, or support of racial discrimination, to name just two.

 Single Issue Politics Page Two
So, a big gun in the abortionists' grab bag of diversionary arguments is "single issue politics." The press and politicians make hot headlines with this fad, and, thereby, try to undermine the efforts of prolifers, especially during election time.
Strange, but most of us never heard of the term "single issue" politics or "single issue" voting until Roe v.
Our country was begun with the single issue "No taxation without representation!" Now, abortionists, with their immoral mindset, use "single issue" as a dirty word when applied to prolifers' efforts to defend innocent preborn human beings.

Or a person who said that rape is only a misdemeanor-that single issue would end his political career.
Or a person who said that no black people could hold office-on that single issue alone he would be unfit for office.
But there are numerous single issues that disqualify a person from public office.

Not all political ecologists or "Greens" are necessarily active in parties or Green politics.

 The Morality of Single-Issue Voting
The single issue that is potentially overriding for the individual voter may or may not be an issue that is treated by the media as a “single issue.”
The single issue must first be examined on its own moral merits.
In this case, at any rate, it seems right and reasonable for a voter to make his decision on the basis of a single overriding issue.

Single Issue Voting by Jeffrey Mirus Most people find it very hard to look terrible evil in the face and confront it directly.
After all, at heart most people are single issue voters, or very nearly so.
One can argue that abortion is a unique issue, or at least bound up with a set of unique issues, that strike at the heart of how we view the human person and the fundamental right to life itself.

 Single-Issue Women's Periodicals, 1968-1983
Media, as a single issue, itself was the subject of at least 86 women's periodicals arising between 1968 and 1983 and probably had a greater influence on extending the women's movement and women's communication than any other of the single group of issues, excepting possibly education.
These single issue papers were able to relate to the particular and special area of greatest relevance to women's personal or professional lives, politically, socially, and economically.
The issue was not as serious a problem to mass media as it was to the women who faced it, and therefore women stressed the necessity to speak for themselves on these concerns.

 Disputations
Joan Chittister, for example, adding single-issue voting to the list of topics about which she considers herself wiser than the Church, advocates voting on the single issue of aid to the poor, and other progressive Catholics aren't real certain why that's wrong.
To do so is to fail both politically and morally(!); politically because you'll never get what you want if you don't tell anyone what you want; and morally because you have an obligation under justice to contribute to the common good by promoting Church teaching on the issues to the body politic.
What the Church teaches is that the right to life (with new facets of it made explicit as new ways of offending against it are dreamed up) is the primary political issue, but far from the only political issue.

 George Monbiot » Multi-issue Politics
One result is a series of peculiarly vicious new laws – the Criminal Justice Act, the Security Services Act and the Police Bill &; sections of which, scarcely challenged by the Opposition, appear to single out the non-violent direct action movement.
He investigated and discovered that, after 11 years, the government had still not issued any guidelines on the use of CCTV.
They see the concerns of Westminster as wholly apart from their own, and believe that none of the political parties either understands or cares for the fate of those who have been gradually excluded from work, benefits, representation and physical space.

The most fundamental fact of life about Israeli politics is that the Likud is a single-issue party.
And that single issue is the re-election of the Labor party.
In true Likud manner, Sharon then proved he was a single-issue candidate and that his single issue was the restoring of Labor to power.

Atlas: Single issue politics, voluntary organisations and freedom of speech: fundamental rights or fundamentally wrong? Developments from the UK by Alison Dunn
Taking a legal perspective, this paper will examine single issue politics, the role of dissent and the campaigning activities of voluntary organisations.
In addition, single issue lobbying is not controlled by governments’ political schedules, so at any time any number of voluntary organisations with multifarious interests can force debate onto issues which governments may prefer not to be high on their agenda.
This is due in part to the fact that voluntary organisations often campaign on single issues and, moreover, single issues that highlight uncomfortable questions of economic, social, political, cultural and moral concern.

Single issue politics - [Sunday Herald]
Invited round for dinner, the only single female among a group of “smug marrieds”, Bridget (played by Renée Zellweger) is asked why young women like her are still single.
It’s not that these women are desperate to be married, rather that they have chosen the single life and are having trouble giving it up – regardless of what Bridget’s uncle Geoffrey refers to as the “tick-tock-tick-tock” of the biological clock.
Women will have taken this route out of choice not pressure (it has often been demonstrated in surveys that the happiest groups of people are married men and single women).

 Cyberocracy is Coming
The extent to which a cybercrat has access to networks that reach beyond his or her office into other parts of the government may be an important issue.
It was inducing political changes that would challenge traditional concepts of national sovereignty and affect not only the role of government in society but also the international balance of power.[28] He foresaw that the outcome would be to the advantage of the open, democratic societies of the West.
Nonetheless, the long history of man's political progress--from tribes and city-states, through theocracies, monarchies, and empires, to the creation of modern nation-states and republics, with their modern bureaucracies and political parties--has not yet given rise to either democracy or totalitarianism as a final political outcome.

In particular, it explains how the Right exploits single issues and manipulates religious faith to direct workers into voting for candidates who are a threat to their economic interests.
Union members need to know that it is dangerous to make a decision based on a single issue when a movement hostile to their economic interests is cynically manipulating those issues.
The complex paperwork requirements placed on unions to use money for politics by such laws would make it administratively impossible to raise the funds needed to communicate with union members on legislative and political issues and elect pro-worker candidates.
