Single-mode optical fiber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In fiber optics, a single-mode optical fiber is an optical fiber in which only the lowest order bound mode can propagate at the wavelength of interest.
There are a number of special types of single-mode optical fiber which have been chemically or physically altered to give special properties, such as dispersion shifted fiber.
The lowest order bound mode is ascertained for the wavelength of interest by solving Maxwell's equations for the boundary conditions imposed by the fiber, e.g., core (spot) size and the refractive indices of the core and cladding.

Optical fiber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fiber supporting only one mode is called single-mode or mono-mode fiber, while fiber that supports more than one mode is called multi-mode fiber.
Optical fibers are commonly used in telecommunication systems, as well as in illumination, sensors, and imaging optics.
An optical amplifier is typically made by doping a length of fiber with the rare-earth mineral erbium, and pumping it with light from a laser with a shorter wavelength than the communications signal (typically 980 nm).

Additionally, single mode optical fibers of the prior art are ill-suited to meet the demands of a WDM system due to the difficulties in minimizing total dispersion and attenuation loss, particularly in the higher wavelength ranges.
The single mode optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said mode field diameter is 8.6 Fm or less at a wavelength of 1310 nm.
In single mode fibers, total dispersion is primarily effected by the material dispersion and waveguide dispersion.

Encyclopedia of Laser Physics and Technology - fibers, glass fibers, fibres, waveguide, fiber modes
Long-range optical fiber communications systems usually use single-mode fibers, because the different group velocities of different modes would mess up the data at high data rates; for shorter distances, however, multimode fibers are more convenient as the demands on light sources and component alignment are lower.
For multimode fibers, there is also intermodal dispersion, i.e., a dependence of the group velocity on the fiber mode, which may be minimized by choosing a suitable refractive index profile but is typically larger than the dispersion of single-mode fibers.
Optical fibers are a special kind of waveguides, which are usually made of some kind of glass (typically silica), can potentially be very long (many kilometers), and are – in contrast to other waveguides – quite flexible.

Optics Rotation Report for Sarah Campbell
Step index means that the optical fiber has a constant index of refraction in the inner core and a different constant index of refraction in the outer core.
Again the fiber optic was not perfectly directed to the center of the detector arm, and the data needed to be shifted to the left in order to have the maximum power intersect the y axis; this also explains why there is more data in the negative angles.
The center of the profile of a fiber optic should be approximated by a Gaussian curve, I(x) = I(0)*exp[-a*x^2], where x is the angular position of the detector, I(0) is the central maximum power of the beam and a = 2/(sigma^2) where sigma is the standard deviation of the curve.

The step index glass fibers are coated with dual acrylate protective coatings to provide the necessary bending and tensile strength required for handling in the field and to ensure maximum fiber lifetime through increased reliability.

Optical fiber comes in two basic forms: single-mode optical fiber for long-distance communication and multi-mode fiber for shorter distances and lower cost.
LANs use a different form of optical fiber, called multimode fiber.

 Confocal Single-Mode-Fiber-Optic Raman Microspectrometer
Because of its single-mode nature and small diameter (a few micrometers), the core of the optical fiber ending in the scanning head could be considered a pinhole, which, in combination with the objective lens, would afford the resolution needed for confocal microscopy with the depth discrimination needed for three-dimensional imaging and spectroscopy of semitransparent objects.
The portions of the optical fibers containing these gratings could be mounted in contact with a common heat sink and thereby maintained at the same temperature.
The light diverging from the output end of this fiber would be focused by the objective lens onto a small spot on the surface of a specimen (or, optionally in the case of a semitransparent specimen, into a small subsurface volume).

Business Wire: Samsung Sets New Standard for Single-Mode Optic... @ HighBeam Research
As a result, the company is capable of offering customers the single-mode optical fiber with more balanced quality - a narrower spread among dispersion values, providing greater flexibilities for customers in the design and installation of their optical network.
Samsung Electronics recently announced a wide range of improvements in the specifications for its single mode optical fiber in an effort to actively respond to the growing demand for superior quality of optical fiber from industry space.
Meanwhile, the mode field diameter at the 1,550 nm has been improved 38% from the previous 10.4 +/- 0.8 (mu)m to 10.4 +/- 0.5 (mu)m, which are beneficial in keeping the relevant splice losses low by reducing the mode field mismatch.

 January 3, 2005 - MOC Drops Corning 'Dumping' Charge - Photonics.com
The MOC initiated an anti-dumping investigation on July 1, 2003, against certain standard single-mode optical fiber products based in the US, Japan and Korea, alleging that foreign products were being imported and sold at lower prices than the market conditions justified, and that Chinese domestic producers were injured as a result.
The investigation was based on a complaint filed by two Chinese fiber manufacturers against several optical fiber producers.(See "Corning Disputes 'Dumping' Allegation," June 16, 2004)
As a consequence of this injury finding, individual dumping margins have been assigned to the specific companies from countries found guilty by the MOC of dumping optical fiber.
