The Smiths: The Smiths ---Ink Blot Magazine
The Smiths' early singles and eponymous debut album caused quite a stir in Britain, despite the fact that the latter was a slightly overproduced and under-realized affair (a fact borne out by the brilliance of early singles and b-sides comp Hatful of Hollow).
Second LP Meat Is Murder solidified their fanbase but The Smiths were rightfully considered a singles band until 1986 tour de force The Queen Is Dead.
In early 1984, the first album from England's newest hitmakers was overdue.

The Smiths, the mid-80's alternative rock group fronted by fey frontman Morrissey, burst into the Top 20 with several indelible singles before imploding as quickly as they had appeared.
Fortunately for the world's teenagers, they left behind several albums of adolescent angst bolstered by solid hit singles.

 Smiths Album Reviews
Of the eight records that The Smiths released in their 4 years together, only four of them were actual studio albums with one of them being a live album and the remaining three being collections of singles and B-Sides, something which testifies to their appeal as a singles band.
The album begins with ‘William It Was Really Nothing’, the first single to be released following their debut album.
Considering the circumstances under which it was recorded it surprising that it was recorded at all and the standard of the album is a testiment to the talent and professionalism of all members of the Smiths.

The resulting album, Viva Hate (a reference to the end of the Smiths) was released six months later, reaching #1 in the UK charts.
A couple of further singles from the album were released with old live, session and demo tracks as B-sides, and the following year the live album Rank (recorded in 1986 while Gannon was in the band) repeated the UK chart success of previous albums.
This album was more strident and political than its predecessor, including the vegetarian proselytising of the title track (Morrissey forbade the rest of the group from being photographed eating meat), the light-hearted republicanism of "Nowhere Fast", and the anti-corporal punishment The Headmaster Ritual and Barbarism Begins at Home.

The Smiths are the pinnacle of what pop music is, and if you are doubting that statement at all, then I have lost all faith in this sad world.

The Impryan Emporium - Album Reviews: The Smiths
They unleashed singles like a machine gun spewing bullets at the charts, for two years hammering away with the infectious, thought-povoking, well-crafted pop songs, before finally unveiling a full-length record, The Smiths.
When the Smiths bursted into the bland climate of the early-eighties U.K. pop scene, their refreshing minimalism, political outspokenness and smart, arty jangling guitar sound received a virtual salivating response from the British music press.
This is The Smiths at their rawest, their most aggressive, the perfect union of rebelliousness and elegant sophistication.

Suede was possibly the most-anticipated debut album of the ‘90s.
The Suede sound finds its roots in the glam rock of the mid-’70s, but also draws highly on ‘80s emotional English pop performers like the Smiths and the Cure.
Suede awakened the libidos of countless young Brits, heretofore starved for anthemic rock and roll.

Some version of Singles include a jam-packed DVD that has the entire library of the band's videos, previously unseen documentary footage as well as live performances such as their headline Glastonbury show in 2000 and their version of "Baby One More Time" from VH1's Storytellers.
Whereas bands like The Cure and The Smiths create music that allows the listener to wallow in despair, Travis' music captures the happiness that comes from the epiphany that your sadness and your situation are a universal experience that others share.
Fifteen top 40 hits have come from those albums, but they still haven't made a big of a splash in the U.S. yet.

 Jack Feeny reviews: The Smiths
Rose-tinted hacks go on about "the birth of indie" and such larks and I'm sure an indelible blue-print for the genre resulted from the release of this album and the accompanying singles.
The Smiths made four official albums, and the fact you reviewed what is essentially a b-sides and rarities collection as an actual album and gave it 9 is perhaps a good indication of the greatness and prolific nature of the best band of the 80's.
Perhaps the greatest evidence of the strength of this album is the fact that five songs (half the album) are all vying for the accolade of being the Smiths' greatest ever song.

Singles always tend to be stand-outs and there's no exception here; the spiffing "A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed" with its Orange Juice plinks and plonks romps in as the album's opener, the Hazel O'Connor-ish "I've Got The Wherewithal" and...
deep breath, "If You Can't Do it When You're Young; When Can You Do It?" both thrill with their slow, lazy vocal and epic kitchen-sink approach; even be upbeat, Smiths-y jangle of "I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough)", their weakest single to date, nestles in neatly as an album track.

When you listen to this collection of nearly all the noteworthy singles by the Smiths, you might marvel over the fact that Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr collaborated and cowrite so many astonishing tunes only to break up a mere four years into their creative burst.
Their favorite kind of compromise made them essentially a singles band, and The Queen Is Dead has a couple of their best (notably "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side," one of the greatest pop expressions of the Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name).
The U.S. edition of the band's second album includes the bonus single "How Soon Is Now?" and while it's a welcome addition, the rest of the tracks stand ably on their own.

Sonically, the group was indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks.
The Smiths' rise to the upper reaches of the British charts was swift, and the passion of their fans, as well as the UK music press, indicated that the group had put an end to the synth-powered New Wave that dominated Britain in the early '80s.

Because of this, the album can be enjoyed as both a conceptual piece (with Blur looking at certain themes synonymous with the rat race and the British way of life), or as a collection of fine pop songs (the singles, particularly The Universal, still sound great).
It wasn't until the second album Modern Life is Rubbish that the iconic Blur sound began to immerge, with the band taking the influence of 60's acts like The Kinks and The Beatles and applying it to the indie-ethos of 80's bands like The Smiths, Felt and The Wedding Present.

Stylishly produced by John Leckie and dressed in a Jackson Pollock-styled splatter cover painting by guitarist John Squire, the album is a stunningly well-realized debut, a record-as-cultural-identity one-off as cataclysmic as The Smiths or Ziggy Stardust.
Evidently more intent on driving associates around the bend than reaping a commercial harvest, Stone Roses produced only a couple of singles (the first, "Fools Gold," was added to a second US version of the first album) during its lengthy hibernation period.
Originally a mod combo known as English Rose (a Jam reference), Stone Roses galvanized their city's — and, by media extension, nation's — Ecstasy-driven post-punk subculture with an utterly brilliant 1989 album of chiming, atmospheric and winningly arrogant folked-up rock.
