Singles (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Singles (1992) is a film set in Seattle, Washington (in the north western USA), written and directed by Cameron Crowe.
The events of the film were set against the backdrop of Seattle and the grunge movement in the city.
The Singles soundtrack included music and the film included cameos from key bands from the Seattle music scene of the time, such as Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and grunge favorite, Tad Doyle (lead vocalist of the Seattle bands Tad and Hog Molly).

 AML-List Review: The Singles Ward
Singles Ward had a number of cameos by local celebrities, but for the most part, they were wasted.
Yet this is a film that pokes fun at everything LDS -- right down to the schmaltzy tear-jerk climax that gets a delicious mocking -- and has a main character that's inactive and about as cynical towards the gospel as you can get without becoming meanspirited.
Singles Ward was a film that should have been made, but it should have been made by people who know how to make a movie.

Laughing at Ourselves: The Singles Ward Debuts
Indeed, the film's theme deals with what a testimony is, how it is manifest, and what it does when challenged by reversals of fortune.
Every Mormon character in the film is pushed to the limit of absurdity: the dweeb who aggressively seeking a mate with bluntness, the overly perky assertive female, the very holy Elders' Quorum president, and the list goes on and on...and on.
While the film is intentionally light on doctrine or thought, it does have it's moments of reflection and poignancy.

 Singles (KOREA 2003)
Although the film is certainly plotted, there's the sense that it's trying to provide "a slice of life" in presenting its tale of four very different, but connected souls.
The film's implicit open-endedness along with the fact that two propose to remain friends leaves the door open for more interaction between the two, but sadly, that story is not present in Singles.
Certainly the film would have benefited immensely from not putting so much weight on Na Nan and her fateful decision (which isn't that surprising), and split its focus more evenly among its four cast members.

Meridian Magazine :: Arts :The R.M. Shows Improvement - 2.5 Stars
The R.M. is not a sequel to The Singles Ward.
The Singles Ward was simply stuffed with cameos of LDS celebrities, and a number of the jokes in the film could only be understood if you recognized that celebrity.
As much as The Singles Ward was trashed for its amateur use of cameos as jokes, it lent a kind of charm to the film that I think those in its intended audience actually enjoyed.

His films are almost entirely driven by his screenplays; his direction is certainly very competent, but it doesn’t shape the material rather than simply illustrate it.
Singles is a transitional work, certainly flawed but at best very enjoyable, a time capsule for its era, and an engaging romantic comedy that doesn’t insult your intelligence.
Singles is certainly an entertaining, warm romantic comedy that’s worth your time but somehow, and frustratingly, isn’t quite as good as it should be.

Singles Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
Kwon Chil-in's 2003 film "Singles", which recently enjoyed a North American DVD release, is a droll look at this tug of war through the eyes of its almost-30 heroine, Na-nan (Jang Jin-young of "Scent of Love" and "The Foul King").
As the film's lead, Jang delivers a bubbly and off-the-wall performance that carries the picture, and she is ably supported by the scene-stealing Eom.

Allen may have anticipated this criticism, because he provides an excuse late in the film: After Gabe lends Rain a manuscript of the novel which he is working on, she tells him that all of his characters are hyperbolic stereotypes, and Gabe counters that he merely exaggerated for comic effect.
The scariest scene of the film, involving a drunken Jack violently dragging Sam out of a party where she embarrassed him, was written chiefly for laughs.
