Nirvana's Nevermind had symbolically knocked Michael Jackson off the top of the album charts at the beginning of the year, and the underground buzz about Seattle bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam was beginning to find its way past circles of indie aficionados and open-minded hard rock fans and into the mainstream.
Singles helped crystallize the idea of the "Seattle scene" in the mainstream public's mind, and it was also one of the first big-selling '90s movie soundtracks (it went platinum and reached the Top Ten) to feature largely new work from contemporary artists.
The soundtrack's strength was the way it was so firmly rooted in place -- where future soundtrack extravaganzas simply contrived to gather as many big-name acts as possible, Singles focused specifically on Seattle-area music (quite logically, given the film's plot and setting), which gave the album the feel of a cohesive document.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Singles
The Singles soundtrack was part of a period where rock music was being discovered by a completely new generation of listeners whose first-ever exposure to this kind of music was either Pearl Jam or Nirvana, and introduces the genesis of modern rock music to these new rock converts.
For an album that is almost an audio bible for grunge, the absence -- for whatever reason -- of Neil Young, the godfather of grunge, and Nirvana, the band that turned grunge from an obscure offshoot of rock to its most loved and most popular avatar, does leave a bit of room for discontent.
This album is way too important to be a supporting soundtrack for a romantic comedy flick; it chronicles grunge history, after all.

Phenomenon, directed by John Turteltaub and starring John Travolta, with Kyra Sedgwick, Forrest Whitaker and Robert Duvall, is a film that tells of extraordinary events in the lives of ordinary people; a story that, by its very nature, suggests the spiritual realities surrounding us.
The task of evoking, enhancing and expanding on those realities relies, to an unprecedented degree, on a soundtrack that ranges far and wide to capture the mood of this rare and resonant film.
In addition to the richly hued songs on Phenomenon's soundtrack is the evocative orchestral piece "The Orchard," from Thomas Newman's exquisite score.
