Singles Going Steady was put out here in the States at the end of 1979, and with just one listen, it is obvious that it is the only Buzzcocks CD comprised of their early material that anyone truly needs.
Made up of 8 single releases, with their accompanying b-sides, Singles Going Steady is an extremely enjoyable listen from beginning to close to end, the one exception being the terrible closing track Something's Gone Wrong Again.
Singles Going Steady is an essential record for any punk fan to own.

Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady Review - sputnikmusic
“Singles Going Steady" is an album of the Buzzcocks’ eight number one singles (well in a punk rock universe) and B-sides filled with catchy hooks, melodies, punk rage, blasting guitars, loopy bass lines, hard-hitting drums, and Pete Shelley’s high-pitch wailing vocals.
The final A-side single is the six-and-a-half minute “Why Can’t I Touch It?" that is written by the entire band as they stretch the boundaries of punk and pop music.
While “Singles Going Steady" was a hit in the punk scene in Britain, the album went nowhere in the U.S. just as tension was beginning to increase that led to the Buzzcocks breaking up in early 1981.

 SPIN.com: 'Singles' Going Steady
This was clearly a mistake -- and disappointing considering that when he attempted to make an honest, heartfelt movie in 1992's Singles, he accidentally made one of the strangest films of all time.
Singles is generally considered a mostly forgettable romantic comedy that happened to have Mother Love Bone on the soundtrack and featured members of Pearl Jam in a band called Citizen Dick.
But despite all that strangeness, Singles is the best time capsule of the grunge era we have.

THE BUZZCOCKS / SINGLES GOING STEADY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Remember, its 16 cuts (with eight more being added to this year's UK reissue) are singles, the type of songs specifically engineered to win the listener over in three breathless minutes or less with impeccable melodies and singalong choruses.
By applying punk rock's spotty-faced adolescent aggression to the radio single's hooks-and-harmonies-oriented format, the Buzzcocks have created short, sharp, souped-up powerpop (emphasis on "power") that sacrifices neither the snottiness of the former nor the sweetness of the latter.
It's Shelley's coquettish, brazen vocals that always lend his caustic words just the right smidge of playful pitch-fl humor, and when they pair with the blistering guitars and airy, almost Spectorian harmonies of axe-slinging partner Steve Diggle, it's pure punk-pop perfection.

To avoid marrying a jerk, singles educators say you should stay out of bed on the first date and cross-examine your partner.
So he registered for John Van Epp's daylong dating skills seminar How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk, which teaches single people and those currently dating how to bond with partners and avoid wasting time with, well, jerks.
There, he learned about Van Epp's "Relationship Attachment Model," which cautions daters to beware of the false intimacy of insta-relationships and encourages them to really get to know their new companions before they trust them, commit to them or sleep with them.

The Buzzcocks emerged from Manchester's thriving punk enclave with a succession of startling pop singles.
Tight melodies and highly memorable hooklines were enveloped in a breathless group sound full of purpose and drive which contrasted with singer Pete Shelly's dispassionate, almost throwaway, delivery.
These eight singles, both a-sides and flips, covered a variety of subject matter, from masturbation ('Orgasm Addict') to 1981 nuspeak ('Everybody's Happy Nowadays'), without recourse to obfuscation.

This is a magnificent collection of their first eight British singles, both A- and B-sides.
The first of a succession of punk groups from Manchester, the Buzzcocks became one of the most successful singles band in one of the great ages of English singles, right up there with the Jam, Clash and Pistols.

In 2006, the pop singles market continued to dominate, in no small part because the pick-to-click mentality of online music stores and ring-tone sites gave consumers unparalleled freedom to choose their own musical adventure.
These platters frequently spawned great singles — Justin Timberlake, K.T. Tunstall, the Rapture, Pearl Jam, My Chemical Romance, etc. — but didn't hold together as cohesive statements.
The band creates the Platonic ideal of the form on Revelations with "Knights of Cydonia," a galloping, apocalyptic single gnarled with doom-metal riffs and robots-in-space vocals.

Pete Shelley expressed heartbreak and frustration ("Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with?" goes one catchy chorus) without falling victim to lovey-dovey cliches.
