Shivaji's general Tanaji Malusare used Shivaji’s famous pet monitor lizard which is locally known as ghorpad named "Yeshwanti" with a rope tied around its waist for climbing up the walls of the Sinhagad fort from it’s steepest and the least guarded side in the dead of a moonless night during the Battle of Sinhagad.
Shivaji, upon hearing the news of the capture of the fort at the cost of Tanaji's death, was greatly aggrieved and is said to have remarked, "The fort is gained, but the lion is lost".

I was glad to have been able to visit the historic fort, but saddened by the lack of any attempt to protect and preserve the monument.
I hope the Maharashtra government takes up some measures to maintain the fort with the dignity it deserves; a small entrance fee can be levied for parking, vendors should be restricted to a certain area, and at least one toilet should be constructed.
Overall cleanliness of the fort and hill is a must, not only for the looks, but also for protecting the ecology of the hill.

This 17th century fort has mostly fallen to ruin, but it is possible to literally walk backwards in history and recreate the scenes of the battle that Shivaji's general Tanaji Malusre mounted from here against the army of Bijapur, with the help of the monuments and signboards posted in the area.
Shivaji was born at this fort in 1627 (it was captured by the Muslims in the 1630s and Shivaji was unable to win it back in his lifetime) that has two minarets and a mosque attached.
