This site is more dedicated to the sinhala language than the general www.ceylon-online.com site and we will try to give you as much information about the singhalese language as possible.
Additionally to the original site at www.ceylon-online.com I improved the rendering of the sinhala signs to make them nicer looking and try to give more info than on most other sites (and there are not many out there).
P.S.:If someone is wondering what singhalese (or sinhala) is - it is a language spoken by the majority of the inhabitants of Sri Lanka and especially the writing is really cute (go here to see the writing).

Sinhala Only in Retrospective   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Even after the “Sinhala Only” policy was implemented the right of Tamil parents to educate their children in the Tamil medium was unaffected anywhere in the Island.
What is important to recognise is that the manner in which the Sinhala language was given primacy was hasty, and insensitive to the dignity of the Tamils who had become comfortable in a position of excessive privilege.
The official status of the Sinhala and Tamil languages have long ceased to be an issue in the country’s ethnic strife.

The Sinhala Maha Sabha, which was inactive in the 1930s, came to forefront in early 1940s under the guise of fostering "Sinhala nationalism" as a preliminary building block for 'friendly relations with other communities' and using "Sinhalese must first try to unite the Sinhalese" as its slogan.
With the growth of Sinhala nationalism the tendency to equate "Sinhala" and "Lankika" and to subsume the latter within "Sinhala" became strong.

Reconciliation Between the Sinhala and Tamil Diasporas
On the Sinhala side the concept that is non-negotiable for a resolution is that of the unitary state.
It is argued that the failure of the Sinhala diaspora to acknowledge the grievances and bitter emotions of the Tamils and the continual use of Sinhala nationalist rhetoric has alienated even the moderate Tamils.
It was a permanent Sinhala majority, which through a series of legislative and administrative acts, ranging from standardisation of university admissions to discriminatory language and employment policies that alienated the Tamils.
