Sinology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sinology is the study of China using a combination of western and traditional Chinese methodologies, concepts, and theories.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, other missionaries such as James Legge (1815–1897) pushed for the establishment of sinology as a discipline in western universities.
Secular scholars gradually came to outnumber missionaries, and in the 20th century sinology slowly gained a substantial presence in Western universities.

The Victorian Translation of China: INTRODUCTION
Professional sinology, or sinological Orientalism, was in this way a largely peripheral discourse within the newly emerging academic salons of international Orientalism in the nineteenth century, disciplinary organizations best exemplified by the tradition of regular scholarly congresses that, beginning in Paris in 1873, met in the great imperial capitals of the Western world.
Sinology and comparative religions may well be the two most peculiar, and orphaned, offspring of the human sciences in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Moreover, the tense relationship of missionary tradition with Orientalistic disciplines such as sinology and the rise of sympathetic, impartial, or comparative approaches to the study of non-Christian religion and civilization is a sorely neglected aspect of this history.

New Sinology - China Heritage Project - Pacific and Asian History, RSPAS, ANU   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
For the description of the China Heritage Project, I speak of 'New Sinology' as being descriptive of a 'robust engagement with contemporary China' and indeed with the Sinophone world in all of its complexity, be it local, regional or global.
In seeking to emphasize innovation within Sinology by recourse to the word 'new', it is nonetheless evident that I continue to affirm the distinctiveness of Sinology as a mode of intellectual inquiry.
The New Sinology is thus also a promotional device, one (among many) aimed at securing the legacy of work on the Sinitic world at the ANU, one aimed at protecting and enhancing the major China-related library resources in Canberra (both at the ANU and at the National Library of Australia).

Students majoring in sinology are required to take a minimum of eight semesters to complete an M.A. degree.
For the minor, a number of introductory courses and seminars have to be completed in order to be admitted to the final examination for the M.A. which, as in the case of a sinology minor, is basically a comprehensive oral text.
The collection is strong in traditional sinology, especially in the areas of philosophy, religion, literature and history.

Sinology, a late science in any case, was also late in developing those means.
Their presence or absence tells much about Sinology and the social conditions under which it exists.
The typology of journals and their support systems, from the learned society model to the institutional model to the commercial model, is in itself a sort of capsule history of Sinology, and this index is arranged that way.

The foundations and philosophy of sinology have not been written yet; it would even appear that sinologists, much to their disadvantage, are not interested in the foundations and philosophy of science at all. We are still waiting for the Principia Sinologica.
Second-order activity, that is, carefully and persistently scrutinising sinology itself is not on the agenda, a saddening fact, of which leading journals on sinology (and Asian studies) are giving ample evidence.
Sinology, in turn, is strange to cross-breeding; ‘the science of China’ has been, and rebus sic stantibus will always remain, a wallflower.

In the next phase, roughly the first third of the twentieth century, both history and Sinology were challenged by social science and suffered a comparative slowdown.
Once interdisciplinary area study got started in the 1940’s it became plain that traditional Sinology, the study of China as a whole civilization, had always been interdisciplinary, and this was indeed one reason why it had remained so separate from professional history in America.
A fourth and final phase may be discerned in the parallel growth ofhistory and Sinology, a phase of self-conscious maturity and coalescence.

So, before I put forward my idea of reconstructing sinology in the age of globalization, I would like to make a distinction between the two: Sinology is a unique learning established by those who are not Chinese but who are engaged in the study of the Chinese language and its literature and culture.
Although they are still different in methodology and ideology, they can still possibly communicate and complement each other, for one of the important functions of the humanities and social sciences lies in its continuous theoretic construction and reconstruction.
In this way, we might well expect that in the context of globalization, the new framework of world culture in the 21st century is characterized by different cultures coming to dialogue and merge with one another in some degrees rather than entering a state of "cultural conflict" as expected by Samuel Huntington in 1993.

The term "Chinese Studies," as is used in American academia, is synonimous to the term "Sinology." Below are the definitions of sinology found in dictionaries.

This panel is primarily concerned with two difficult and perplexing issues: (1) whether literary Sinology in the U.S. can be and ought to be undertaken without cross-cultural perspectives informed by contemporary theories; and (2) whether the critical study of Chinese literature can benefit from a judicious use of Western theories.
On the other hand, some other scholars maintain that without new theories, literary Sinology would remain bogged down in traditional paradigms, approaches, and methodologies and doomed to eternal repetitiveness.
The members of this panel will be engaged in exploring possible ways of bridging the gap, theorizing Chinese literary thought in relation to Western literary theories, and doing practical criticism of literary works using both traditional scholarship and contemporary theories.

They also wrote many letters from China that were avidly read when China began to be considered politically or economically interesting enough.
