Siouxland is a general term for the area around Sioux City, Iowa, an area that includes much of northwestern Iowa, the northeast corner of Nebraska and the southeast corner of South Dakota.
The boundaries of Siouxland have no official designation, but as the term is frequently used by Sioux City media, one can assume that Siouxland is roughly synonymous with the Sioux City sphere of media influence.
The Siouxland area is larger than that of the Sioux City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is comprised of four counties: Woodbury County, Iowa, Dakota County, Nebraska, Dixon County, Nebraska and Union County, South Dakota.

In July the Siouxland District Health Department (SDHD) in Sioux City contacted the UHL requesting assistance with a CDC directed study to investigate the prevalence of Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) in the Siouxland region, focusing on acute care and long-term care facilities.
The problem is not unique to Siouxland; other medical centers in Iowa have begun to recognize the presence of these resistant organisms.
Siouxland was unique in that the public health community and the medical community pulled together to investigate and intervene so early.

On September 30, 2004, a full scale exercise was held in Sioux City, IA. The exercise was to test the response capabilities of several agencies in the Siouxland area to handle a large scale incident involving hazardous materials.
The exercise was a culmination of several months of developing a sub-area contingency plan.
The representatives agreed to work toward a plan, and decided that the new sub-area should be called the Siouxland, a name already commonly used for the area.
