There was always a chance of seeing bigger pelagics on a Sipadan dive (seeing five hammerheads on a sunrise dive at 35 metres was a real highlight) but the great beauty of the area is that divers can also head to Kapilai and Mabul island for some 'muck' diving.
The visibility is not as good as Sipadan's but the macro life is amazing; we saw several huge frogfish, leaf scorpionfish, mantis shrimps, garden eels, fire gobies, and various pipefish.

Sipadan is a limestone pinnacle rising from 600 m.
The owner of the barge that decimated the reef of Sipadan should be heavily fined and the money used to repair the reef which will take many years.
Why on earth a barge of that size was even allowed to enter Sipadan water's is beyond me. Any diver with half a brain will tell you how shallow the water's are close to the jetty.

A lot of Sipadan’s shallow coral reef has been damaged over the years, due to divers and boat anchors, but the fish and green turtles are still there, as are the big fans on the deep walls at 30 to 40 metres.
Last year, all the accommodation on Sipadan Island was closed down, in a move by the Malaysian Government, to give the island a break from tourism, and to help have it declared as a ‘World Heritage Site’.
Sipadan Island is one of the most spectacular places I’ve dived for large marine animals, and I hope that its green turtles in particular, are given the highest possible protection.
