  Siphonophorae
Siphonophorae without pneumatophore, highly polymorphic, with a nectosome typically formed by one or two nectophores.
Siphonophorae with a budding zone on only one side of the base of the aboral float; without bracts and without swimming bells; tentacles are generally simple, the nematocysts are not concentrated in batteries on the side branches, when these are developed.
Although they are highly modified colonies, the Siphonophorae show close affinities with the Anthomedusae (manubrial gonads, desmonemes).

siphonophore | English | Dictionary & Translation by Babylon
Each zooid is an individual, but their integration with each other is so strong that the colony attains the character of one large individual; and most of the zooids are so specialized that they lack the ability to survive on their own.
Thus it is debatable whether zooids or siphonophora are individuals.
Also, because complex multicellular organisms have cells which, like zooids, are specialized and interdependent, siphonophora may provide clues regarding their evolution.

Physalia pile up and are abundant in the center of the waters of the Sargasso Sea due to the movements of the currents around it and the rotation of the Earth.
The Portuguese Man-of-War is the sole member of the Siphonophora with a unisexual colony; it is distinguished by a contractile, horizontal float.
Although Siphonophora are generally considered to be the most specialized hydrozoans, some researchers claim that it is in fact the most primitive order, with the medusa and the polyp not fully differentiated.

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the UK (2002), 82: 171-172 Cambridge University Press
A new species of the genus Rosacea (Siphonophora: Calycophorae: Prayidae) is described from the Gulf of Oman, where its eudoxid stage was found in abundance.
It is distinguished from other Rosacea species by the course of the lateral radial canals on the nectosac of the nectophore, and the shape of the eudoxid bract and the arrangement of its bracteal canals.
