Topic: Siphuncle

Siphuncle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The siphuncle is a strand of tissue passing longitudinally through the shell of a cephalopod mollusk.
In the case of the cuttlefish, the siphuncle is indistinct and connects all the small chambers of that animal's highly modified shell; in the other cephalopods it is thread-like and passes through small openings in the walls dividing the chambers of the shell.
In living cephalopods the siphuncle is used primarily in emptying water from new chambers as the shell grows.

Nautiloid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These are the internal chambers, the siphuncle and the sutures of the shell, features that are also found in the shells of all ammonoids.
The septa were perforated by the siphuncle, which ran through each of the internal chambers of the shell.
Surrounding the fleshy tube of the siphuncle were structures made of calcium carbonate: septal necks and connecting rings.

Classification of cephalopods is based largely on shell morphology, suture presence and patterns, and siphuncle characteristics.
Siphuncle large and usually occupying at least one-fourth of the diameter of the shell; position variable.
Siphuncle large, as much as one-half of the diameter of the body chamber, marginal to sub-central in position.

The siphuncle tends to be centrally placed with most nautiloids and is often wider than the ammonoids, and with the ammonoids the siphuncle is usually located near the outer margin of the shell, the venter.
Gases arising from the decomposition of the carcass tend to expel water from the shell and the dead animal tends to rise to the surface, held buoyant by the gases retained in the chambers.
After the body decays, the remaining water is expelled from the siphuncle into the living chamber and the shell is free to drift as to wherever the tide takes it.

The short-lived, extremely diverse clade of Upper Devonian (Famennian) ammonoids which belong to the order Clymeniida are unique among the thousands of other ammonoid genera in positioning the siphuncle on the dorsal side of the shell, contrary to a ventrally located siphuncle in all other ammonoids.
A functional explanation for the dorsal siphuncle has always been a mystery, and because of the rarity of specimens, adequate material to conduct meaningful research of this group has been unavailable.
Polished axial and sagittal cross-sections of 62 specimens of clymeniid ammonoids from the Ural Mountains of the former Soviet Union were prepared in order to study the internal morphology of each conch in detail.

Thus, the dorsal location of the siphuncle in clymeniids and the ventral siphuncle location in the goniatitids may have each been the optimal locations for chamber liquid removal, given the different body chamber lengths, siphuncle positions, and chamber orientations in the two groups.
And, needless to say, the hydrostatics of an extremely diverse clade of ammonoids, containing scores of genera and hundreds of species, cannot be generalized on the basis of 15 simulations.
Enlarged siphuncles seem to have partially and, in some cases, fully compensated for volume and surface area reductions by their shortened dorsal location.

The genus possesses a nonsegmental lining in the siphuncle, thickening gently apicad-like very slender endocones, which may terminate in a narrow tube that may be traversed by diaphragms.
Buttsoceras actually develops within its siphuncle a lining, thickening gently apicad; under slight silicification, shell wall, septa, the exterior of the siphuncle, and the inner surface of the lining are replaced, but the main mass of the lining remains calcareous.
The condition is analogous to that noted by Yochelson in Palliseria, in which the thick shell wall, being silicified on the outer and inner surfaces, presents the deceptive aspect of being composed of three original layers.

There is a siphuncle, a tube used for propulsion and buoyancy.
The location of the siphuncle is not like the nautilus.
It is the pattern created by the folds, along with the position of the siphuncle that is the basis of classification.

Connecting each of the septa is a fleshy tube that passes through the septal walls called the siphuncle, which through osmotic regulation can adjust the fluids and gases in the chambers, which in turn affects the buoyancy of the organism.
In some cases, as in the Nautiloidea and the Endoceratoidea, the siphuncle passes through the central part of the septa, whereas in other cases, as in the Ammonoidea and the Bactritoidea, the siphuncle passes through the lower (ventral) area of the septa.
Septal walls (and sutures) are straight, siphuncle passes through the central part of the septal walls, often calcareous deposits are observable in the chambers that probably served as ballast.

The animal lives in the largest and newest chamber, with a tubular elongation of the body, known as the siphuncle, extending through the septa to the apex of the shell.
The siphuncle removes liquid from the chambers and replaces it with gas, giving the animal the buoyancy that permits it to swim (backwards except when feeding), which it accomplishes by ejecting water through a funnel.
The nautilus breathes by means of two pairs of gills; it feeds on crabs and other animals, which it catches with its long, slender tentacles (numbering more than 90) that encircle the mouth.

While the siphuncle is runs through the centre of the shell in nautiloids, in both ammonoids and coleoids the siphuncle is ventral.

The Ammonoidea are one of the three subclasses
The Ammonoidea are one of the three subclasses or orders within the Cephalopoda, and are characterised by having chambered shells with complex septal walls, a ventral siphuncle, and a radula with nine teeth per row.
The group is further subdivided into suborders, which are defined on the basis of features such as suture line complexity, the shape and position of the siphuncle and septal necks, and overall shell shape and ornamentation.
In the Anarcestina, Goniatitina and Prolecanitina the siphuncle is ventral, as it is in coleoids, while the Clymeniina have a dorsal siphuncle like some nautiloids.
