Initially the locality was bounded by Lansdowne Road (presently Sarat Bose Road) to the east, Russa Road (presently A.T. Mukherjee Road and S.P. Mukherjee Road) to the west and the Hazra Road to the south.
Many young people from the locality developed into world famous individuals like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee and his son Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das and lately Satyajit Ray, who made the area his home, among others.

The early nationalists were inspired by Swami Vivekananda, the foremost disciple of the mystic Sri Ramakrishna and helped by Sister Nivedita, disciple of the former.
The first native president of the Indian National Congress Sir Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee and the first Congress president to advocate self rule by Indians, Sir Surendra Nath Banerjea (referred to by the British as "Surrender Not") were early eminent Calcuttans, who provoked and influenced Nationalist thinking in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
They are Sir Ronald Ross (1899 Medicine), Rabindranath Tagore (1913 Literature), Sir C.V. Raman (1930 Physics), Mother Teresa (1977 Peace), Subramanyam Chandrasekhar (1983 Physics) and lastly Amartya Sen (1998 Economics).

It was Dr. Fredrick John, the education secretary to the then British Government in India, who first tendered a proposal to the British Government in London for the establishment of a university in Calcutta, along the lines of London University, but at that time the plan failed to obtain the necessary approval.
The first Chancellor and Vice-chancellor of the Calcutta University were the then Governor General Lord Canning and Sir James William Colvil, the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, respectively.
Sir Gooroodas Banerjee was the first Indian vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.
