Summary of Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur Book 2
Sir Balan rode off adventuring and happened to slay a knight on an island by a castle, and came under a spell to take his place and similarly challenge all who passed by.
Meanwhile his brother Sir Balin promised to protect Sir Herlews le Berbeus on his way to Arthur under horse arrest to explain why he was sad, but an invisible knight called Garlon slew him and Balin was forced to take over his quest for a damosel.
Sir Balin rode off again on his adventures, including attempting to help Sir Garnish woo his duke's daughter away from her lover, but causing them all to be killed instead, until he came to a castle where he was told he may not pass without jousting with a local knight who lived on an island.

Sir Thomas, as Froissart has done before him, described the habits of life, the dresses, weapons, and armour that his own eyes looked upon in the every-day scenes about him, regardless of the fact that almost every detail mentioned was something like a thousand years too late.
When Sir Balin saw her dead he was sorely hurt and grieved in spirit, and repented the death of Lancear, which had also caused so fair a lady's death.
But Sir Gawain would have no mercy, and unlaced his helm to strike his head off; and so blind was he with rage, that he saw not where a lady ran out from her chamber and fell down upon his enemy.

Other knights of importance include the naive Sir Pelleas, who fell helplessly in love with the heartless Ettarre (or Ettard) and Sir Gawain, Arthur’s nephew, who appeared variously as the ideal of knightly courtesy and as the bitter enemy of Launcelot.
Also significant are Sir Balin and Sir Balan, two devoted brothers who unwittingly slew one another; Sir Galahad, Launcelot’s son, who was the hero of the quest for the Holy Grail; Sir Kay, Arthur’s villainous foster brother; Sir Percivale (or Parsifal); Sir Gareth; Sir Geraint; Sir Bedivere; and other knights of the Round Table.

BALIN AND BALAN: TEXTS, IMAGES, BASIC INFORMATION
Balin's misfortune lasts to his final act, combat with his brother, whom he doesn't recognize.
Ironically, this battle was fated from the first appearance of Balin in Malory's version of the story, when he proves himself to be "a passynge good man" by removing a sword that a lady has been forced to wear and thus, because he wins a second sword becoming known as The Knight with Two Swords.
His Balin is known as "the Savage" (Malory called him "Balin Le Savage") and figures in the struggle of Arthur to destroy the bestial both in the realm and in his subjects and thus to raise themselves to a higher level, the level of the angels.

The Legends of KING ARTHUR and his KNIGHTS
When Sir Ector saw the sword, he turned back straight with Arthur and Sir Key and came to the churchyard, and there alighting, they went all three into the church, and Sir Key was sworn to tell truly how he came by the sword.
But at their first encounter Sir Lancear’s spear flew into splinters from Sir Balin’s shield, and Sir Balin’s lance pierced with such might through Sir Lancear’s shield that it rove the hauberk also, and passed through the knight’s body and the horse’s crupper.
So Sir Balin and Sir Balan hid themselves within the wood, and at midnight came out from their ambush among the leaves by the highway, and waited for the king, whom presently they heard approaching with his company.

 The Story of Sir Balin
When Balin, standing apart, beheld the Knights one by one try the sword, and fail to draw it, his heart beat fast, yet he shrank from taking his turn, for he was meanly dressed, and could not compare with the other Barons.
In all the fights that he fought, Sir Balin was the victor, and Arthur, and Merlin his friend, knew that there was no Knight living of greater deeds, or more worthy of worship.
'Sir,' said a Knight to him, 'your shield does not look whole to me; I will lend you another'; so Balin listened to him and took the shield that was offered, and left his own with his own coat of arms behind him.

She is in the record as of the "Vulgate Cycle" of stories [1215-1235] and definitively portrayed in "Le Morte Darthur" [1485] by Sir Thomas Mallory, where we see her as a lake spirit who gives the magic sword "Excalibur" to Arthur, and takes it back as he approaches death.
Sir Balin angers Arthur by killing a Lady of the Lake in some stories, but this is probably some magical clone of the real personage.
Her greatest conflict is with Morgan Le Fay, who is the Dark Side of the Force used as white magic by the Lady of the Lake, but this is a subjective conflict depending on which journals one reads.
