Did his wife say to him at breakfast `Would you like more toast, Sir Ernest?', or perhaps, in those tender intimate moments, `That was wonderful, Sir Ernest, how was it for you?' The whole attitude underlying the book is a memorial of an era when Whitehall was the High Indaba of the British establishment.
Future Sir Ernests took firsts in classics at Cambridge, joined the civil service and were later appointed to chair the Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission (later the Coal Commission) and similar.
Gowers writes in compact, sometimes dryly humourous, style, as he corrects the often confused use of "which-that" and "who-whom", the employment or negligence of the subjunctive, and punctuation.

When such guides work well, and Gowers is one that works (and reads) very well, they acquire a force and authority that keep the language clear, flexible and responsive to the constant pressure of the workaday world.
In 1948 Gowers, a senior British civil servant, was asked by the Treasury to write a book that would improve the written work of government workers in every department.
By 1951 Gowers had two short books, here combined in one, and revised in 1986 by Sidney Greenbaum, Director of the Survey of English Usage and Quain Professor of English at University College, London, and Janet Whitcut, former Senior Research Editor of the Longman Dictionary and Reference Book Unit.

Gowers writes, "Professional writers realise that they cannot hope to affect their readers precisely as they wish without care and practice in the proper use of words.
When one considers that Plain Words was first published in the 1940s it seems incredible that Gowers could have come up with so much sensible advice that it has taken some linguists more than five decades to accept.
Gowers writes: "It was, I believe, Dryden who invented the rule that prepositions must not be used to end a sentence with.

Gowers' comment in this letter reveals his own admiration for Fowler: "So he continued to diversify his lexicography with the duties of a house-parlourmaid and no doubt performed them more scrupulously than any professional" (Ibid).
Even Sir Ernest Gowers who was responsible for bringing out the second edition of Modern English Usage, more than 30 years after Fowler's death, concedes that Fowler was "mathematical rather than literary." Sir Winston does not hesitate to prefer the uncommon word if there is something to be gained by it.
There are some who deprecate this enlargement of the word's meaning, but I do not think there is any use in doing that; it is well established, and can justly claim to be expressive and vivid and to fill a need.
As Sir Alan Herbert has pointed out, "John and Jane anticipated marriage" is not likely to be interpreted as "John and Jane expected to be married".

 "shit" is not an acronym
Sir Ernest Gowers, in his revisions to the second edition of "Fowler's Modern English Usage" (1965, p.116) traces the rise of the acronym to World War I (ANZAC, etc.), but it really didn't becom a common method of word formation in English until World War II.
The lack of a need for such a word suggests the degree to which acronyms were not a part of daily life until then.
As Gowers illustrates with many examples, modern wars breed acronyms.

 THE ISTPF, history
Commonly known as punning and plays on words, paronomasia is the humourous or fanciful use of the similarity between different words and/or the different senses of the same word.
Sir Ernest Gowers, in Fowler's Modern English Usage, suggests that perhaps the best known pun is one that requires a basic knowledge of Greek to achieve its effect.
Puns are otherwise found at every turn, and in spite of our generally condescending view of this light-hearted form of speech, turn up with disconcerting (for some) frequency in the works of many of our most highly venerated authors, including Shakespeare.

The second edition (edited by Gowers) is OK, but the first is really the nonpareil.
But the dominant one is undoubtedly the idiosyncrasy of the author, which is revealed to an extent unusual in a 'dictionary'.
As Sir Ernest says in the epigraph to this review, that's not a style we're used to finding in dictionaries.

Churchill on Prepositions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The alt.english.usage FAQ states that the story originated with an anecdote in Sir Ernest Gowers’ Plain Words (1948).
Supposedly an editor had clumsily rearranged one of Churchill’s sentences to avoid ending it in a preposition, and the Prime Minister, very proud of his style, scribbled this note in reply: “This is the sort of English up with which I will not put.” The American Heritage Book of English Usage agrees.
It is not clear how the anecdote came to be attributed to Churchill by Gowers, but it seems to have circulated independently earlier.
