Gordon Richards was born in Ivy Row, known to the locals as Potato Row in Donnington Wood, on 5 May 1904.

Sir Gordon always had his work cut out if he was going to achieve the same success at the track-side as he did as a mount, but he did train Pipe of Peace, the champion two year old colt of 1956, and Reform, who was the leading miler of 1967.

No one thought Richards record would ever be topped, and certainly not by a jumps jockey.
It may be hard to compare the merits of a flat jockey riding 269 winners 55 years ago and a modern-day jumps jockey surpassing that feat, but that should not decry what McCoy has done this season--he is over 150 winners clear of his nearest rival.
Richards flat season in 1947 lasted only eight months, but he had almost as many rides as McCoy.

Sir Gordon’s record for number of winners in a season had stood for 55 years and McCoy couldn’t hide his delight at breaking it.
Arguments have raged in the weeks leading up to McCoy’s assault on the record, whether the modern-day feat should be considered a greater achievement than the one managed by Sir Gordon in an age which did not afford jockeys the luxuries of air travel and agents in their search for winners.
But the fact remains: Sir Gordon achieved his record as a Flat jockey, while McCoy reached one of the greatest milestones in sport by risking his life every day.
