However his uncle Edward Morgan was Lieutenant-Governor of Jamaica after the Restoration of Charles II of England, and Henry Morgan married his uncle's daughter, his cousin, Mary.
In 1666 Morgan commanded a ship in Edward Mansfield's expedition which seized the island of Old Providence and Santa Catalina, and when Mansfield was captured and killed by the Spanish shortly afterwards, Morgan was chosen by the buccaneers as their admiral.
Sir Henry is immortalised now by Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum, though it is produced in both Puerto Rico and Jamaica.

Henry Morgan, known as Harry, was one of the fortunate few to survive outbreaks of yellow fever and dysentery during the first five years of English occupation in Jamaica.
Morgan, generally accepted as Mansfield's successor as unofficial leader of the island's buccaneers, used his commission to assembled twelve ships and 700 men, including a company led by his old friend John Morris and a contingent of French flibustiers, whose country was at war with Spain.
Sir Henry Morgan died on July 25, 1688 and was buried at Port Royal with a 22-gun salute from the ships in the harbour.
